Nickel Boys
Arguably the film that has gotten the most awards attention this season is Nickel Boys. It has been on my to-do list for a while because the incredible Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor is in it and I am still incredibly bitter about her getting snubbed for Origin last year. Also with her in it you know that it is going to not only be a good film, but an important one. So with awards season looming it was long past time to watch Nickel Boys.

Best Movies of 2024
We are starting 2025 with talking about the best movies of 2024. We are doing a top 10 list, every single film on this list got either a perfect 10/10 or got really close with a 9.5/10. These are films I felt didn’t have any flaws in their objective elements and then subjectively I enjoyed watching and I feel have real rewatchability factor. These are in no particular order.

Kraven the Hunter
Okay I have put it off long enough, it is time to watch Kraven the Hunter. Now when the first trailer was released for this I knew it was going to be terrible because 1) Aaron Taylor-Johnson was a truly horrendous casting decision and 2) The trailer didn’t even know what the film was about. I knew immediately that we were going to be struggling for a plot of any kind which is about par for the course for Sony superhero films. Also we are doing an awful lot of Spider-man adjacent characters, without Spiderman. I know how all the licencing and shit works but at that point just don't. If you can’t make a good film with the characters you have, then don’t. It's actually really not difficult.

Megalopolis
This is a movie that I have been desperately pushing off this year. I would say that there have been mixed reviews but the reality is that people hated it, and there were a few people singing its praises. As we know I don’t trust the general publics opinions on anything, as I very rarely agree. All that said, even the synopsis for this movie is a hot mess, as is the cast. So let’s go ahead and start in on Megalopolis.

The Return
With talk of the Odyssey adaptation looming, a much quieter version of the story managed to slip under the radar this year. The Return tells the tale of Odysseus after he returns home. Ralph Fiennes stars in this Greek tale of family, and reunification. It did get a film festival premiere as well as a limited theatrical release. This means that it is technically eligible for awards but it has been so quiet that I am not sure that it will get any attention. I have long said that films released in December do not get the attention that they deserve, despite the academy having early access to the films, and there being almost an entire month from end of year to actual nominations. If I can do it with a job, so can the academy members that don’t have to work for a living (that means all of them).

Heretic
We’ve mentioned that there have been a lot of thriller and horror films this year, very few of them have actually been good. But joining the long list is Heretic, Hugh Grant is unexpectedly the perfect person to be in a horror movie. He is normally a romantic comedy person, maybe a period piece here and there but he really hasn’t delved into the creepy and frightening. I remember seeing exactly 1 trailer for this movie exactly 1 time and being vaguely interested, and then I just completely forgot about it. So now that it has reentered my consciousness, let’s talk about Heretic. Now this is an A24 film, which means it is either brilliant, or god-awful but they really don’t seem to have an in-between.

Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim
Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim was one of the most anticipated films for nerds this year. I love Lord of the Rings and am always craving stories from middle earth. I don’t care if they are good or not, I just want them. So I personally was very excited about this movie. I was also just really excited to get another LotR animated movie. There is just so much you can do with animation and Lord of the Rings is just the perfect backdrop for it.

Nightbitch
So we have talked about some pretty phenomenal movies this year, we’ve also talked about some pretty terrible ones. But we have yet to talk about one of the weirdest movies of the year. Starring Amy Adams, Nightbitch is a film that came out this year. The premise of this movie alone is actually insane and at the very least, it's interesting.

Small Things Like These
Small Things Like These is a historical drama starring Cillian Murphy. I suppose for the purposes of award season this qualifies as an international film but when I do my wishes and wants it's gonna go wherever I think it should be. Cillian has proven time and again that he is an incredibly powerful leading man so I was excited to see him in a quieter film. Especially one I knew he was excited about as he helped produce the film as well. This is based on a book that was very much based on a true story, so the framing of this story is rooted in reality.

Nosferatu
As someone who went through a deep and intense vampire phase when I was about 13, one that never really ended, words could not describe how excited I was when the remake of Nosferatu was announced. Now I hate remakes on principal but I will never say no to more vampires. Vampires are always good, especially when we take them back to their roots. For those of you who don’t know the original Nosferatu film was an unauthorized Dracula adaptation so if you are noticing a beat for beat resemblance, you should.

Hit Man
Glen Powell has been a busy boy this year, for some reason. He is the most successful mediocre actor that I have ever seen. He is moderately attractive and somewhat talented. He is the most average that Hollywood has to offer and thus we all must endure him in about a thousand projects. It is one of many films this year that premiered at film festivals last year but earned their award eligibility this year. That is, they were released in theatres this year before being bought and distributed by streaming services. Hit Man did have theatrical runs in limited cities, normally that is done just so films can be eligible for awards.

Carry-On
Netflix has really cranked out the original content this year. Some of it good, some of it really really not but that is a separate discussion. We will now be diving into the plethora of original films Netflix has come out with this year. Starting with Carry-On, a new Jason Bateman film that is by all means a Christmas movie. Now I don’t have a lot of faith in Netflix’s original movies. They are more often than not, truly terrible, but it came out in 2024 which means that it is on the watch list.
