Foe
Saorise Ronan has been on the independent film train this year. She is using her incredible talent to highlight why smaller budget films are what cinema can be. FOE was released earlier this year and is based on a book. Now as the film never hit theatres it is not eligible for awards season, but we will talk a little bit about that later. I am trying to assemble a little, mini awards show for streaming services which feels like it's bound to happen eventually anyway. For now it will happen on my YouTube channel with me as all the presenters.

I.S.S
I.S.S was yet another movie that I recall seeing the trailers for several times and then hearing nothing else about it. Several films that were released at the beginning of this year fell off the face of the earth. Now to be fair the film didn’t look particularly good or interesting but still. Normally there are strong feelings for movies either way, people that love them won’t shut up and people that hate them are even louder (it's me, I’m people). That said, too many movies from January-March were not talked about at all. So what is missing?

Spaceman
Okay so I am in the camp of thinking that people like Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller and the like might have a lot of acting range. They just don’t use it very often. Adam Sandler has like one serious movie over the last 20 years, and honestly his brand of comedy is exhausting. That said he was in a new movie this year that is classified as a sci-fi/drama which is something that he has never done before. I was intrigued to say the least. So we are watching Spaceman with Adam Sandler, and Carey Mulligan.

The Bikeriders
I remember seeing the trailers for The Bikeriders and being vaguely interested but then I genuinely didn’t hear anything about it upon release and after it came out it was met with complete silence. I haven’t heard anyone talk about or acknowledge this movie which is a bit surprising considering Austin Butler’s recent success and popularity. And I am morbidly curious as to why so here we go.

Godzilla X Kong
When Godzilla X Kong came out this year I was excited because I love bad monster movies. The only Godzilla movie I have ever seen is Godzilla Minus One which is absolutely not a monster movie but perhaps one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. So I was ready for some dumb monster shit. This is your friendly reminder that I judge movies for what they are, I don’t expect every movie to be a cinematic masterpiece. I am expecting very little plot but some cool monster fights, if I get that then the movie will get a pretty high rating. It’s called managing expectations, and it's something a lot of you need to get better at.

Miller's Girl
When Miller’s Girl was released this year there was a lot of controversy surrounding the movie, for lots of reasons. The biggest of which is that false accusations are less than 3% of sexual assault reports and we know that most assaults are not reported. So making a movie that explodes this narrative that false accusations are a bigger problem than they actually are is extremely harmful. Second of all, as if to enhance this problem, Martin Freeman is not a great person. He has made several jokes about date rape and so his casting added to this first problem. So we watched the movie super legally so as to not contribute to anyone’s paycheck. For journalistic integrity I needed to see if the internet was actually right about the films issues...

Gladiator 2
Gladiator 2 is getting mixed reviews from audiences, and not doing too terribly well at the box office. But as we know by now box office success means nothing and I don’t trust the general public's opinion on cinema. So we watched it and though it is nowhere near the quality and influence of the original film it is still a well crafted and enjoyable watch.

My Old Ass
Aubrey Plaza has really only ever taken projects that she seems passionate about. But this year she has thrived in Agatha All Along and My Old Ass. Now she has faced criticism in the past to the effect that she only plays herself in movies and has no acting ability beyond her personality. I think her exploration of Rio in Agatha All Along proved that false. But My Old Ass seems to be back to her regular brand of comedy.

The Fire Inside
There have been quite a few films based on true stories this year and they were all incredibly depressing, at least for the most part. I suppose no one chooses to adapt happy stories, because what's the fun in that? But among the sad stories of the world, there have been some truly touching and uplifting ones, including The Fire Inside.

Kraven The Hunter
Now I don’t know anyone who is like super excited to go see Kraven the Hunter. It truly is one of the most random heroes that they could have chosen to center a movie on. But it is a comic book movie which means here I am doing background.

Mufasa
So…two my favorite animated films of all time are The Lion King, and The Lion King 2. The music is phenomenal, as are the stories and I rewatch both of them incredibly regularly. So when I heard that Lin Manuel Miranda was doing the music for Mufasa I was extremely excited. Mufasa is another one of those “no one asked for this” kind of movies and I feel like it exists only to tell the story of how Scar got his name. But we truly didn’t need a whole movie for that, a little mystery never hurt anyone. Now the reason that the 2 main Lion King movies are so successful is not just because of the music but it is also because their stories are literally Shakespeare. The first Lion King is Hamlet, and the second is Romeo and Juliet. Every single time they have tried to expand this franchise without using Shakespeare it's been bad. Lion King 1 ½ was an embarrassment to film, and the show on Disney Jr. is…a show. So we went into Mufasa skeptical at best.

Dune Prophecy
It seems a little fast but we are in fact at the end of the first season of Dune Prophecy. We can only assume that they planned on this being more seasons because there is simply no way to wrap up all of our loose ends in this one final episode. So far the show has done an incredible job of giving us background into the rise of the Bene Gesserit and of the beginnings of House Harkonnen. I am very excited to see how the first season of this new series ends. So let’s dive into the Dune Prophecy finale.
