Timecut

Review

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished 12 months ago 3 min read

When Timecut was released I remember the internet being very angry about the year 2003 being used for a couple of reasons. The obvious one is that they didn't actually get the aesthetic right and those of us that were there could see the big gaping flaws in the production. The other reason being that we don’t like feeling old and 2003 was not that long ago, so fuck you a little bit.

Opening with a party and a murder seems about right for a horror film. Oh the serial killer is totally the first dude that tried to talk to her. He 100% did it.

So she’s like 18 at most, she really never met her sister. She is just aware that she had one and she was killed.

She went back in time and finds herself at the day before all these murders happen. She gets to meet her big sister, and she theoretically tries to stop the killings but her involvement ends up adding to the body count, so it's not going well.

As someone who was present in 2003, the hairstyles are way off, as is the makeup. The outfits are a little hit or miss, there aren’t enough layers. All that said, the soundtrack is hitting pretty good. And Summer has a Buffy the Vampire Slayer poster in her bedroom, which as it was airing was not that popular, which just means that she is cooler than everyone else.

This girl is terrible at time traveling. In 2024 you should have seen at least one time travel movie and the fact that you’ve either seen nothing or have just chosen to ignore all the basic rules. You aren’t supposed to change events, you definitely aren’t supposed to tell everyone you meet that you are from the future.

If she saves big sister, she definitely ceases to exist. She was very obviously a replacement daughter. They literally gave her her sisters middle name. She finally figures that out, great after we’ve broken all of the clearly laid out time travel rules.

My husband pointed out that Lucy is totally walmart Zendaya, she is talented adn beautiful but her whole vibe is very much discount Zendaya.

Ya know my actual biggest horror movie pet peeve is when someone is getting chased by a serial killer and they go into an enclosed space, you are far more likely to die. This dude has a knife and you are in an open field, just stay in the fucking open and run.

It was the nerd dude! I fucking knew it. Him from the future is an okay twist, but I fucking knew it. A+ Incel energy. Truly some next level bullshit.

Obviously all that was changed because Lucy exists and managed to impact the people around her in a short amount of time. I was right and she absolutely does not exist in a timeline where her sister is still alive so she travels back to 2003 to live a life with people that actually care about her. I think we may have glossed over the fact that she was totally a replacement baby and her parents really didn’t give a fuck about her but alright.

In general is was actually a pretty good horror/time travel movie. Yeah the production design was not the best but most of the popel watching it today aren’t gonna fucking know so I really don’t think it actually matters that much. It was great tension, the killer was pretty predictable but not in the way that I thought, so the writing was actually pretty decent. I’d say it's about a 7/10.

Your reviews are always fun to read and you seem to write them with the energy of the movie still present. I just read your "Girl Haunts Boy" review which was a much calmer thing. Having said that, I turned 40 in 2003, so thanks for bringing that up. I'm not much into horror and you gave me enough to know I won't miss not seeing this one. "Walmart Zendaya" very funny
