Smaller productions have been able to tell some incredible stories this year, among them being NEON productions which has just been cranking them out. One of the films that NEON produced this year is called Babes. I was excited to see this one because it seemed slightly less intense then some of the other movies they produced this year and I was excited for a comedy.
We are opening with a pair of best friends meeting up one of them is in labor. They decide to go out to eat anyway and I love this for them. They are the kind of best friends that are super close. Like uncomfortably close for some people. The kind where the married friend’s spouse is the third wheel.
Not sure if this is a buddy film or a romantic comedy because now she’s the subway super bonding with this stranger. So either they are gonna fall in love or this is gonna end bad and we will be back to focusing on the best friend story.
Oh we are hooking up, yeah this is gonna end badly. But they genuinely seem so good together. He is really so sweet. I’d be better with this if he was just some hot guy with no personality.
She is so pregnant, she goes to their clinic to find out his last name and they tell her that he died. I am not sure if I actually believe that but either way she has to deal with this baby thing by herself.
She decides to have the baby, and the best friend communication in this movie is fantastic. The fact that they had a whole conversation using nothing but the word “bitch” tells me that this screenwriter knows what it feels like to have a relationship like this.
This movie is doing a really great job of exploring how such a close friendship grows and changes as life events happen. Her best friend has a husband and two kinds and she can’t even process the idea of her best friend Dawn not being able to be there when she gives birth. And then Dawn tells her that she should get a doula because she doesn’t have childcare because Eden fucked up while she was babysitting and showed a 3 year old a rated R film. And she does, but that keeps Eden out of Dawn’s life and Dawn clearly feels a little isolated and alone.
Dawn and Eden choose to go on a baby moon together, which is some really adorable best friend shit. Except Dawn seems to use it as a personal vacation for herself without much consideration for her extremely pregnant friend.
Eden clearly doesn’t understand how babies change your life. She has been the single friend for so long that she truly doesn’t understand that once she has a baby that adding her shit to her friends already existing family isn’t going to be a good plan. She is so codependent on her friend she has no concept of how to do this baby thing by herself, which is why she shouldn’t have done it in the first place.
Dawn gives up something that she really wanted, and that would financially benefit her family to be there for Eden’s birth. That was certainly a choice.
They end up moving a few blocks away from each other. It's a cute movie, I feel like we don’t get a lot of movies that are actually about female friendships. Certainly not ones that take place into adulthood. I feel like this movie very clearly fills a gap that is needed. Adult female friendships that change with life events are super important to see. I loved it, I thought it was funny and adorable and the depiction of the best friendship was super accurate. It gets a solid 8.5/10.
