Dave Bautista is undeniably the best wrestler turned actor. He is genuinely incredible, that said he is in a deep danger of being typecast with the other wrestler/actors as an action star. Not that he isn’t good at it, he most certainly is. But he was the best part of Knock On The Cabin and he has an amazing range so I would love to see him do more softer things. All that out of the way he did get a sequel for My Spy which actually seems to balance the two things pretty well. So we are watching My Spy: The Eternal City.
The dialogue is pretty funny. The jokes are landing, the delivery is great.
So I didn’t actually see the first movie which is great because I think sequels should stand on their own. So far this one does, nothing is happening that you need context from the first movie for. They are doing a pretty good job of explaining everything you need to know as we go, without exposition dumping.
Dave Bautista is so good. He just wants to be a good dad so bad, he’s so cute.
The emotional story here is actually pretty layered for an action movie. JJ is the stepdad, or moms boyfriend, still kind of unclear. So we have baby girl not really accepting him as her father figure. We have him trying so hard to bond with her. Against a backdrop of him being a CIA operative and her turning into a teenager. It's kind of a good premise and it's really cute.
Now this 14 year old is on a full blown mission. I would say that is child endangerment but it is actually to keep her safe. And at least she is trained.
They, of course, just had a straight up boxing scene for Dave Bautista. The funny part was him getting the shit kicked out of him.
Bonding finally seems to happen when JJ’s life is in danger. So she is definitely written properly as a teenager. She just wants to be treated like an adult even though she is very much still a child.
Aw, JJ even clues her in on the fact that her best friend is in love with her. She sees it and clearly goes for the boy that knows her better. Especially now that they have gone through this incredibly dangerous experience together, it is certainly bonding. And they were already best friends. They are pretty cute.
The final, climactic, save everyone scene is going on a little long but I feel that way about pretty much every action movie ever made so I feel like maybe the problem is me. They are changing it up pretty often so that’s nice, it at least keeps it visually interesting. And of course, Sophie swoops in at the final second to save him.
I’ve come to the conclusion that I will watch Dave Bautista in literally anything, he is incredible. He is so talented and I really hope he doesn’t pigeonhole himself in action movies because he can do so much more than that. But as far as action movies go, this one is actually very sweet and it definitely had more of a plot then most. Overall it was paced pretty well, I liked that the father-daughter relationship was built up throughout the script and they never dropped the emotional stuff. It’s a really good 7.5/10, I will probably rewatch it. When Sophie calls JJ her dad I didn’t tear up at all, I like this movie a totally normal amount.
