Netflix has been really liberal with their content lately. And some of it is actually good. It's all pretty mid to low budget but they do have some gems in the mass of content that they keep putting out. Among them is Girl Haunts Boy, it is an absolutely adorable romantic comedy/buddy film that does a really great job of exploring themes of grief and loneliness.
Okay so from what I can tell this is being framed like a romantic comedy but the main girl is from the 20s and dead. And the boy lives in the house she haunts. Pretty cute, wouldn’t be the first time that we saw something like this but it's still pretty cute. His dad is probably dead so he’s had to deal with loss, that is going to come into play when he can finally see the girl who's haunting him. And because we have to add the element of him feeling out of place he is at a new school.
The first kid that talks to him at school is this super weird girl who is into the supernatural and the dead, so that fits.
The score is a little eerie, not sure if that is intentional or not. But it is also really repetitive and intentional or not that makes it super boring. I know it's just a Netflix movie but let’s get it together.
For some reason after this kid reads her book and picks up the ring she stole he can see her. It’s like the one ring but in reverse. When he puts on the ring, he can see her. That’s kind of cool.
So her spirit is tied to the ring, when he is wearing it he can see her and she can go where it goes. So he takes her around town in this really adorable montage and explains the last 100 years of music to her.
He takes her to a Gatsby party so that she can feel like she’s at home for just a little bit. And when he does they realize that other people can see her.
Weird girl looks up Cole’s ring and discovers that Bea can’t move on until the ring she stole is reunited with it's other half. Story wise it's pretty interesting. I’m not hating it. Peyton List is doing a great job, a girl from the 20s is perfect for her.
OOOOOOO Kissing. He’s kissing a ghost. Aw. They are actually really cute, this is gonna be such a bummer since obviously they can’t actually have a relationship.
Lydia tells him everything about the ring and now this poor boy has a decision to make. He doesn’t want her to go so he doesn’t tell her, but when she finds out she wants to break the curse because she doesn’t want to be a ghost anymore. Damn I am kind of loving this narrative.
Oh he likes her a lot, she just has to smile at him real cute and he will do whatever she wants. I know what that’s like. It's pretty great.
He is having a really tough time with his dad’s death. He can’t even talk about it with his mom. When they finally do talk about ti he realizes that he can’t keep Bea with him just because he’s lonely.
Wow this was actually a really cute movie. I loved it a lot. It was so much more than just a romantic comedy, I don’t think that’s even the right genre to describe this. It’s sweet and funny and the story is actually fantastic and this is so much more than I ever expected from a Netflix film. A beautiful 8/10, this is going to become a comfort film for me for sure.
