Players joins the list of romantic comedies released this year. A list that is very short. Though in the grand scheme of things it does appear that rom coms are making somewhat of a comeback. I doubt they will ever reach the heights they were at in the 90s/early 2000s but we do seem to be getting back into the genre. This was an exclusive Netflix release, no theatres were involved. But that does mean that it is eligible for my personal, very exclusive streaming awards that I will be doing at the very prestigious location of my bedroom.
This group of friends has lines that they run on people. I suppose the subversion here is that you would expect that these friends to all be men, but no! There is a woman that condones lying to strangers for sex so everything is fine. And she’s a sports writer so she is one of the boys.
They run plays as a group until the chosen woman gets captivated by someone who is too amazing to just sleep with. She does end up hooking up with him, because how else does a rational person avoid catching feelings?
And after sleeping with this magnificent man she of course starts to question the whole running plays on strangers things. Because all it takes is the right dick to get someone to settle down.
Are we supposed to believe that she is going to end up with anyone except this best friend dude? He agrees to help her get the fancy man she slept with but it's so obvious that they are going to end up together.
This group of idiots is trying to come up with a play to land a relationship for a real life adult. Because none of them can function in real life relationships. This whole group fully stalks this man to figure out how they can manipulate him into falling for Mackenzie. This is doing so much. Also I would expect that from a buddy film directed at men but this is a romantic comedy directed at women. So the lying an manipulating is fine as long as a woman is involved? It's just a super weird premise especially when it's super predictable that she doesn’t even end up with this guy.
She also just has nothing in common with him. Why would you want to go through all of this work pretending to like things you don’t and actively changing yourself for someone? That sounds exhausting.
She is so emotionally stunted that as soon as she feels like things aren’t going exactly she tries to manipulate him back into a relationship zone. But when they go on a double date with her bestie and his new girl it becomes even more evident that these two are going to end up together. Ooof best friend is JELLY of Mackenzie and Nick and his new girl is jealous as hell of Mackenzie.
The movie is decently funny. I really hate the premise but these relationship dynamics and the jokes are really hitting.
Okay prediction for this ending; she gets the drawer she wanted at Nick’s place but her best friend gives her a big declaration of love and she is forced to choose.
…and I was pretty much correct.
Overall the movie was fine. It had some really funny moments and I think that the casting was good, but it was just so formulaic and predictable. There really wasn’t anything that resembled an original thought except for the completely predictable subversion of a woman being the one to “run plays”, and being one of the boys in general. Definitely felt like it was written by a man and I mean that in the most derogatory way. 4/10 at best, no awards for you.
