"Artists, like the Greek gods, are only revealed to one another." - Oscar Wilde

Hey all you lovely writers! 🩷

Something that I have loved over the last months is taking part in other writer’s unofficial challenges, they have been so much fun! So I’m going to be brave and try and put my own unofficial challenge out there for you all to attempt (or not attempt if you choose not to)

I love all things Greek Mythology, and often reference it in my writing.

Here's a few of mine that do:

Marked by Eros,

The Spring Tears of Demeter,

The Sadim Touch

So ... when trying to think of a challenge, I thought to myself ‘It has to be about Greek Myth!’ I also had a little ponder about some of my favourite Vocal challenges lately, and the style and restriction of the 'Breakup Nonet' challenge was one I really enjoyed working with. The syllable restriction was fun and challenging, and I believe makes a writer consider not just every word, but every beat, pause, and syllable (obviously) used ...

So I wanted to create a challenge combining these elements with my love of Greek Myth!

Why 'Summoning the Pantheon'?

The pantheon of Greek gods is the twelve (remember that number) gods that dwell on Mount Olympus. The exact gods in the pantheon chop and change at times, and there's WAY more than twelve Greek gods, but the twelve as decreed by Zeus, make up the pantheon ...

So my challenge:

Write a poem, inspired by or referencing at least one character of Greek Myth*, and mention at least one season of the year. The poem needs to consist of twelve lines; with the first line consisting of twelve syllables, the second of eleven, and so on, finishing with the last line of one syllable.

*Does not need to be a god, any character of Greek Myth counts! Some of the mortals are way more interesting than the god! But please use the Greek names for the gods, not the Roman.

My Poem:

(Love Echoes On)

My healing heart waits for Summer's warmth to return

Be still and know that they are coming one day

Someone greater than all that came before

Souls enraptured like Eros to Psyche

Orpheus to Eurydice

Without all the tragedy

Fate's touch linking our lives

Never torn apart

Hearts will echo

Matching beats

Echo

Love

I hope you enjoyed my little attempt at my own challenge - I'm sure you'll all do much better! 🩷

Results / Prizes:

The challenge will close on the 30th September and I will aim to post results by the 10th October. (You can enter as many times as you like) The entries will be read and judged by me, and I will be awarding what prizes I can to the top three.

Now, as much as I would like, I'm not in a position to award monetary rewards such as tips. However, the winners will receive some love and attention from me on Vocal. Also ... up for grabs is some copies of my debut novel! (Which also includes multiple Greek Myth references!)

1st prize:

Like and comment on 15 of your stories, and a signed copy of my novel, shipped to you at my cost

2nd prize:

Like and comment on 10 of your stories, and eBook copy* of my novel (I will need to arrange an email to send to)

*if you're willing to cover shipping, 2nd prize could choose a signed copy (apologies, but I'm a broke uni student)

3rd prize:

Like and comment on 5 of your stories, and eBook copy of my novel (I will need to arrange an email to send to)

Feel free to link this challenge piece somewhere on your poem to share the challenge with others, but it is not a requirement for the challenge!
