Meditation and My Recovery Journey
“Start a meditative practice. Be mindful of your breath and the world around you. Breath into that space. Build that bridge between your head and your heart. Surrender, and let go. Breath in love, exhale fear.” Still experiencing the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal, ashamed of myself for having to be in a drug and alcohol recovery rehab because I had burnt every last bridge and now had no place to go, I was certainly not in the right frame of mind to let these suggestions sink in. I was arrogant, naive, pessimistic, and overcome with guilt and shame. I thought to myself “how can meditation be a part of my recovery? I didn’t come to a rehab to have spiritual practices pushed upon me!”

Transform to Transcend
Mystie walked into the room not knowing what to expect. He seemed all but too familiar. She had never met him before, but it was just a feeling. Then she realized, they were all alone in the room together for the first time. Although, this isn't what she expected. He was teaching a yoga class. There should have been other students, yet here they were. All alone. Mystie was a little nervous. She preferred to practice in the back; to remain unseen. She generally only followed instructors verbal cues. If she didn't know a pose, she'd follow the practice of the person in front of her. She liked to focus on Spirit during her practice and let the world fade away. But in this case she had no choice but to be seen. She also had only taken his class once before, so she wasn't acclimated to his teaching style yet.

Love and Bliss
It started 7 years ago when I just happened to be waiting for the same bus as her, Ma Prem Madhuri. It was an unfamiliar name at the time, though now she calls herself Azia. But now I know ‘Madhuri’ is a very common name in India, meaning ‘sweet’. ‘Prem’ is an even more common name, meaning ‘love’. Ma means ‘A woman who is a master of themselves’. Not that Madhuri is Indian born, she came into her body in New Zealand from European descent. Was named by her parents ‘Louise’, but later on took on these new names.

Meditation: 12 Scientifically Proven Health Benefits
We have all heard that meditation has a positive effect on health. Maybe these are just the words of people who have been practicing it for 10 years? Or are there scientific works that prove the benefits? A study from Harvard University claims that meditation leads to changes in the composition of the gray matter of the brain. Just 8 weeks of mindfulness meditation can affect the functioning of the organs related to memory, stress and empathy. This gives a lot of bonuses, which we will discuss in this article.

Vipassana Sets You Free, But You Must Have The Will To Survive The First 10 Days
You can train your mind the same way you would train your body to thrive and be healthy. This is insight meditation and Vipassana. Vipassana means "to see things as they are". Vipassana, or insight meditation, helps us see past all that clutters our mental space, such as worrying about the future, feeling bad over the past, and following after what we want. The body and mind are then viewed in a completely new light. This can be helpful in overcoming anxiety and depression. Intuition meditation allows us to have more control over our lives, allowing us to live the life we desire. This can lead to a sense of peace and compassion for others. It sounds pretty good, doesn't it?
