Some of the coldest pages in the historical books can be written in the name of the German Nazi Party, at the very core of the turmoil from the World War II. The horrors of the Holocaust, the Night of the Long Knives, and the gruesome human experimentation in concentration camps have left scholars grappling with a fundamental question: probably it was the psychological effects that made peace loving people to turn into perpetrators of unspeakable violence under the influence of such cruel conditions. At the search for the reasons, some have resorted to the hypothesis of the paranormal forces, for example of the demons or the 666, though these notions absolutely contradict to the results of the scientific research.
The controversy would be present if that quotation would mean that all Nazis’ actions are in favor of the occult. In reality, the data shows that there is a connection between the Nazis and esoteric beliefs. This connection could be traced back to ideologies like Arioaphy, which developed in early 20th century and took Theosophy, an occult movement foundated by Helena Blavatsky, as the most common starting point. Furthermore, ariosophy, whose ideology was based on the racist and eugenics tenets, therefore provided the Nazi Party's cult and occult tendencies an appetite for enchantment.
A different connection between Nazi ideology and the occult can be illustrated through the example of the Thule Society, whose promoters were even ranked among high-level Nazis. Thule Society's obsession with the origins of the Aryans ethnic identity and with mythical lands like Atlantis reinforced the Nazis' interest in the occult. As they became increasingly enchanted by expeditions led by the Nazi Germans in search of fabulous relics and lost kingdoms of the past, it is recounted that they also engaged in quests for Atlantis and the Holy Grail.
Heinrich Himmler, the boss of the SS and Gestapo was the one specifically interested about the occultic practices. He was a follower of the Austrian occultist Karl Maria Wiligut and the secret rites of this mysticism formed the basis for Himmler's conception of the structure of the SS as well as the Wewelsburg castle. When it comes to Himmler’s enthusiasm for the occult, different Nazi leaders like Adolf Hitler were more skeptical, and they connected with the Oracle simply to prop up their propaganda.
While Nazism and black magic are indeed linked with each other, the nature of this linkage is deemed to be misleading and fairly sensationalized. However, some elements of the cult existed in the Nazi ideology and some activities that have been associated with the Nazis were to certain extent influenced by the cult. The Nazi’s barstone, on the contrary, was founded on banal social and political forces as well as not supernatural factors. Fact-checking is necessary to make sure that nothing is hidden and Alger's determinative view is not adopted that the Holocaust has just occurred because of mysterious Dark Forces.
On the last point, the actors of the wickedness perpetrated by the Nazis were human beings burdened by ideas of intolerance and sovereignty. The detailed overview of the craziness and magic history of Nazism and occultism becomes a big warning about otherworldy events and how to face hard historical truths. These can be awkward.
While examining the intricate connections between the Nazi regime and the occult, we unveil the deeper layers of human psychology, and give a glance to the mystery revolving around extreme and unorthodox ideologies. Even though the occult was somewhat used by Nazis as an instance of pseudo mysticism and power, the inevitable ugly fact for the Nazis was that the tyranny of their regime was the real reason for their downfall. This lesson is in realizing that there have been complex pitfalls of blind following of the extreme ideologies and that we should not be part of these mistakes that the past generations made.
