Our dashing and romantic hero, let's call him Wayne, is hopelessly in love with Jules. He's been searching for a present for a while. It must be perfect. True love demands nothing less. He waddles to and fro, nosing in every nook and cranny with his beak, beady eyes peeled.

"How Are Your Roaches?"
In the Soviet Union, people had limited ways to get rid of roaches in their homes. The most common insecticide, Dichlophos (a Russian version of the Dichlorvos), was scarce, diluted, toxic for humans and ineffective. Fighting roaches was a never-ending losing battle. Until the late 1990s, when the notorious Chinese Deltramethrin-containing chalk became available. But even that was a hit or miss as roaches adapted to it. Here's a famous joke from that time:

In the Dining Room
Is this what the future will be like? All the little knick-knacks, books and other little chotskies that we all save, and display will be gone. In this dining room so clean and bare there is a mystery there. The owners say there is no mystery with a smile on their faces. For if you look around shouldn't the table be set for, I thought, formal dining rooms always had the table set, as if to show off all the many treasured dishes one likes to show off right down to the placement of the silverware.
