Introduction
This is inspired by a couple of lines from the song "A Trick Of The Tail" by Genesis.
"Am I Wrong To Believe In The City Of Gold?
It Lies In The Deep Distance
........
There, Beyond The Realms Of Your Weak Imagination
Lie The Noble Towers Of My City, Great And Gold
Let Me Take You There."
Mirage
They left their home town, they were pilloried and made fun of, because they said they had been told of a city where all could be successful as long as they tried, and go on to lead fruitful lives, helping others and being helped by others.
They were berated because people said they were looking for something for nothing, but they had worked hard in their jobs and were then told they were no longer required. The unemployed were looked down on by the employed because that is what the employers told them to do.
Sacking someone because they could was nothing more than an act of bullying.
So, two of them started off walking into the desert with directions given to them by a strange horned man. He was not a devil or demon, maybe a satyr, but he was extremely kind, and they believed his words.
They brought meagre supplies with them, and they walked and walked, but saw nothing but sand. For four days, they continued and ran out of food and water.
They had come too far to go back, but according to the satyr's directions, they should have found the city, but there was nothing but sand dunes. They were determined to keep going and eventually could go no further, and fell to their knees, believing they had taken a wrong turn or misunderstood the directions.
Then, on their knees, the sand parted as if the sand were a mirage, revealing the towers of the city of gold, and coming towards them were four satyrs, saying:
"Welcome, we are so pleased to have you here, you will find many human friends here who will encourage you and befriend you and show you how to make your life perfect"
Just when they were about to give, a paradise had revealed itself. They went back to the city with the satyrs and met others, satyrs and humans, and were soon living rewarding lives, joining in and being appreciated by all.
They worked on building new parts of the city and each night went to bed fully appreciative of their wonderful new lives.
