Lana did not tell Lara everything the following morning.
Not just yet.
While she said she had "just been looking around," her hands trembled. She could not help but consider what she witnessed. The mirror. The figure moving. The murmur.
Lana slipped back into their mother's bedroom that night after Lara had fallen asleep on the couch with an open folder of aged files on her chest. She had one of their mother's necklaces, the silver locket, chilled against her flesh now, a flashlight, and a notebook.
Her heart was pounding as she stood before the mirror.
"I am not afraid of you," she told it.
The mirror did not reply.
She then opened the locket, and the mirror rippled like heat waves off the highway. A handprint — new — flowered on the inside. Five long fingers pressed against glass.
Lana did not flee.
Instead, she employed her own hand. then something was sensed. There was this glimpse of someone else's memory. A hospital corridor. There is a sign on the door that reads, "Sub-Level 6-Authorized Personnel Only." Something was shouted in her mother's voice. And then it went dark.
She gasped and stepped back.
Lana finally revealed to Lara all the following morning.
Lara did not laugh. It was not a dream, she told her.
Instead, she produced a folder she had hidden under the floorboard.
A blueprint of the hospital was provided. An old one and the one they now have.
Something that the new one did not have, the old one did:
Sub-Level 6.
Lara shot Lana a glance. "Whatever is going on, it starts down there."
Lana nodded. "And we're still being called by someone."
What do you think the mirror is trying to show Lana a warning, a memory, or something more dangerous?
