Chapter One: The River The morning began, as most mornings did at Stillwater, with the river speaking. It spoke in a language Reed had known since he first learned to paddle: a steady, rolling voice of cool currents and bright, tiny silver scales that blinked like stars. It spoke in the slap of water against mossy stones, in the hush of reeds that bent and whispered secrets to one another, in the soft clucking of kingfishers returning to their nests. Reed listened with his whole body—the twitch of whiskers, the tilt of ears, the pressure of paws on the slick riverbank—and the river told him everything he needed to know for an ordinary day.

Why You Never Insult A Midget. Content Warning.
At a young age, I was never really one to filter my words. Whatever came to my mind, I just spat out without a care in the world. On one day during my 7th grade year in middle school, I had the chance encounter of meeting the smallest kid in my class. She was a midget, and certainly wasn't afraid of standing up for herself despite her small stature. During our school lunch hour, when everyone was standing in line to obtain their daily munchies, she stood behind me. She tapped my side and asked me if I would allow her to Chinese Cut in front of me. Now at that time, lunch was a dangerous time and nobody wanted to ever give up their spot. To her I said, "No way you short, fat midget". I turned around and just waited for the lunch line to move. Unbeknownst to me, I had lit a fire that should have never been lit and I got burned with it. The pain came right from my rump and it hurt like heck. I looked back with a quick turn of my head and saw her, literally biting my rear end with all her might.

The Lucky Nick. Content Warning.
It was many years ago that this story began, with a young hunter who was not as good of a shot as he wanted to be. Alex was his name and my younger brother. Me and him have been close for as long as I can remember and we have many interests that work with one another. However, hunting was something that was not shared as evenly as the rest. My brother was not the most avid hunter and would have preferred to just sit at home and read a book of otherworldly fantasy. Unfortunately for him, he lived with a family that hunts for the meat we eat, so he had to come along with us on our yearly hunting trips.

Hortense, Our Savior
One would not think that a cat could save someone, but as time goes on, we are seeing more and more cases of cats saving people from many kinds of disasters. A good example of this is the video that went viral about a cat who saved a young boy from being attacked by a dog. They may not seem as the loyal type, but there is always a chance for everything. This story is about how the cat named Hortense saved our family after she was saved by our grandmother.
