Lips as Red as Blood
Hair as black as coal…skin as white as snow…lips as red as blood… Oh, if only people knew where the blood on those lips came from, maybe then I wouldn’t shackled to a wall, talking to myself as I wait for a trial I don’t deserve for a crime that…well, I did try to commit, but righteously so. Anyone would have done it if they knew what I do about that girl.

Facebook Vaudeville. Top Story - April 2025.
Author's Introduction: The following dialogue is very loosely based on the true struggle that I have had with Facebook over the last week or so trying to get back into my Facebook after it got hacked and, subsequently, locked. Spoiler alert: it still has not been resolved.

A Novel Idea for 2025. Runner-Up in New Year, New Projects Challenge.
Let me tell you a story about a novel idea that has been in the works for thirteen years. It all started when I was a freshman at UC Davis, taking both a literature class in fairy tales and an honors program class on poetry. After learning about the Grimm Brothers, I was inspired to write an epic poem in which the Pied Piper had a sister, whom I called the Singing Gypsy. Later that year, this epic poem birthed a short story that is now known as Red Shift. (You can see the current version of this short story here on Vocal.) From this short story, I created an entire world incorporating several characters, both original and based on fairy and folk tales. I began to plan a series based on the lives of the Pied Piper and the Singing Gypsy. However, the life of a secondary character caught my attention, Beorn the Alchemist. Soon, his life pulled me away from the Pied Piper and the Singing Gypsy to a new series of novels based on Beorn’s complex adventures. It is the first novel of this series that I plan to finish in the year 2025.
