I love to combine my love for travel with writing.
Dislcaimer: I have not served in any branch of the Military including the Marines. This poem was inspired by a train trip, when I passed Quantico.

The night goes on, Until dawn, Revelers crowd the street, A night in Shockoe Bottom, Can't be beat, The James River at the door,
Looking out on the James, A night in Rockett's Landing, Is not the same, Boats sail, Down the bend, Nights there,

The Capital City, Of the Commonwealth of Virginia, The Foundation on which the state is built, The James River, Always full of silt,
The lights shine bright, Alone at night, On the Kanawha Canal, Enjoy it I shall, Boats on the James, This night is not the same,
From the city heights, I look down on the James River, I see the Christmas lights, The city will come alive, This time of night,
A breath of frozen wind, Blew time and time again, The house rattles, Looked on the farm, There is no cattle, The world is frozen solid,
Table red and green, Decorations to be seen, Fire in the fireplace, So many memories, That can't be erased, Lights all aglow,
Morning light rises, Night turns to day with joy, Cirrus clouds rise.
Lit fireplace, Crackling sound, Tasting soup, Soft blankets abound, Hickory smell piercing the air.
Sitting on the porch, What is that racket? Well, the rail signal is clanging loud, The bright red lights blinking, The distant sounds of the locomotive,
Sleep with a chill in the air, In blankets warm, Leaving me all on my own, Entering a peaceful phase, New day is dawning,
