Watching the Trains on the Rails at Night

Sitting on the porch,

What is that racket?

Well, the rail signal is clanging loud,

The bright red lights blinking,

The distant sounds of the locomotive,

Are really loud,

Which train is it?

The CSX?

No, Maybe Norfolk Southern,

Perhaps Union Pacific,

Maybe BNSF,

I see the lights illuminate the track,

Here comes the CSX,

My, the train is moving slowly,

What is that jerk noise?

Oh yeah,

The train ground to a halt,

What is that distant sound that I keep hearing?

There is the Amtrak

The flanges scrape the rails,

The train is moving at lighting speed,

Finally,

What do I hear again?

The train jerking forward,

Now it is time for it to move on,

What is that scraping noise?

Oh yeah,

The flanges are scraping the rails,

Now it has moved on down the line,

This moment of fun,

The pleasure has been mine.
