Writing Down the Bones Deck #22
Inspired by Denise E Lindquist

Hi guys,
I have been trying to write more now that the kids are back into school. I love these cards and I am so thankful for Denise for showing us all these beautiful writing prompt cards.
Full disclosure: I have not read Natalie Goldberg's book titled by the same name YET although I do now own it. I'm excited to read it but, again, I have been knocking things off my TO DO LIST shelf one day at a time.
Let's just get right into things. Without further ado, enjoy my attempt at easing my writer's block with prompt twenty-two.
22) Tell me how you learned to drive.
My dad taught me how to drive. I know I don't write about him very often but this memory of mine means a lot to me. My mom couldn't handle teaching me to drive so he took over, especially after I failed my first test for turning left on a red light. (In my defense it was yellow when I was looking at it.)
We practiced in our farm yard, parallel parking between buckets, till I was ready for the real thing, and he also taught me to drive on grid roads. He was the first person I called after I passed my second driver's exam.
He was so patient with me. We didn't spend a lot of time together growing up as he was busy working but he made time to teach me how to drive. It still means a great deal to me. He still is quite patient with me now that I think about it. I appreciate that about him.
I know I don't talk about my dad much on here, but he truly is a steady hand whenever I need him. I still think of him whenever I give a semi truck drivers some space while they are in the middle of a turn.
And maybe that's why driving has always felt a little bit like more than just driving to me. It reminds me of those rare, quiet moments when it was just the two of us. No big speeches, just the hum of the engine and the calm way he’d point out what to do next. It was his way of showing me that even if he wasn’t always around, when it mattered, he would show up.
I think those lessons on the road were bigger than what they really were. They were a lesson for me about my dad. He taught me patience, awareness, and the importance of giving people space, both on the road and in life.
