Writing Down The Bones #8

Inspired by Denise E Lindquist

This post is inspired by Denise E Lindquist. I never would have known about this deck of cards if it wasn't for her. So thank you Denise for sharing this lovely deck of cards with all of us on Vocal.

Full disclosure: I have not read Natalie Goldberg's book titled by the same name. I just own her cards.

I also receive a small commission from Amazon if you purchase these cards via the link that I have provided for you. Thank you.

I've been stuck in a writing rut. I have honestly tried everything to get myself out of the funk I have found myself in after losing my fourth child. I tried reading more- when I have time that is. I tried art journaling. I even tried listening to my favourite podcasts about writing and writers block. I mean nothing has been able to get me out of this writers block and depression I find myself in.

I was scrolling Vocal and I came across another post by Denise that featured these cards. And I thought to myself, maybe this is it. SO I bought them. I thought to myself, "Maybe this is what I need". I've been carrying the cards around for about a month- trying to get "in the mood" to write again. I started writing this on my Kindle Scribe today while I was at home and I felt everything just flow. I'm going to try and post every prompt that I work on. I truly love tarot and oracle cards as well as affirmation cards, that is why I clicked so well with these.

SO without further ado- enjoy my attempt at erasing my writer's block with the eighth prompt.

8) Tell me about a favorite cafe, diner, luncheonette (do they even still use that word anymore?), coffee shop.

I got this one. The restaurant that I grew up waitressing at. It's a local one that is attached to my family's hotel. I have been working at the place, catering since I was 12 years old. My grandma used to pay me in books before I collected my first paycheck.

I've seen the place change over the damn near 15 years that I have worked there. We used to carry specialty coffees, Italian cream sodas, we even had an ice cream machine at one point. That place, feels like coming home everytime I go there. I used to do my schoolwork with friends in the restaurant, now sometimes I sit and write before working my shifts.

The stories I could tell. The stories the walls of the building itself could tell. It is a place of history that is for damn sure. But I think the staff are what make that place what it is to me- and that is home.

This was my grandma's life work. She started working for the old owners when she was 18 years of age as a front desk clerk before working her way up to an owner. She worked damn near till the day she passed away from lung cancer. It was her baby-her business. I'll always admire the entrepreneur she truly was.

I suppose it was my favourite place to go. For a coffee and maybe a cheesecake. Maybe I haven't been to many coffee shops or cafes. I always dreamed of living in a big city and being one of those people that went for coffee in a fancier cafe every day, with a book in hand. I think that's every reader's dream.

I'd love to own my own coffee shop one day after the experience of working for my family's restaurant. That's on the bucket list actually. One with a bookstore attached. I think every book lover dreams of that actually. Maybe I'll do it one day for her. That would be a beautiful way to honor her legacy of her hotel.

Thanks for reading my ramblings about my favorite place.
