Writing Down The Bones Deck #19
Inspired by Denise E Lindquist

Hi guys,
I have been trying to write more now that the kids are back into school. I love these cards and I am so thankful for Denise for showing us all these beautiful writing prompt cards.
Full disclosure: I have not read Natalie Goldberg's book titled by the same name YET although I do now own it. I'm excited to read it but, again, I have been putting things on the "TO DO LIST" shelf lately..... whoops.
Let's just get right into things. Without further ado, enjoy my attempt at easing my writer's block with prompt nineteen.
19) Tell about your mother's hair (or an aunt's, grandmother's, stepmother's foster mother's, sister's).
My mother's hair is dark and curly. She dyes the greys away usually with a trip to the hair salon. When I was younger, she did not know how to manage her long, curly hair. It was usually a tangled mess in a ponytail when my brothers were little. Wild. Untamed. Then she found a hair stylist that taught her how to manage her curly hair. I had curls till I was about 3 years old. Now, my hair can't hold a curl to save my life. I have always been envious of my mother's curls.
I have a vivid memory of her shaving her head for a friend of hers that was diagnosed with cancer when I was a child. She came home wearing a toque in warm weather. After that she usually kept it short. I remember being really proud of her for doing that for someone she cared about.
When my grandma was passing of cancer, I got it in my head that if she had to shave her head that we all should do that for her, specifically because of that childhood memory that I had. My grandma had also shaved her head for that friend. It must have been someone they worked with for them both to shave their heads but I cannot really remember.
There were five of us that shaved our heads for our grandma. My partner and I, my mom, one of my brothers, and my grandpa. I thought it was a really beautiful thing to do for her as she truly was the most beautiful person that I have ever met and still is.
The hole that I feel inside without her around, is unmatched. She truly was a funny lady. My grandma has always kept her hair short. Like a hair cut that was unlike anything I have seen on someone else now that I actually think about it. She always cut and dyed her own hair because she didn't want strangers touching her hair and, if she messed it up, it was on her shoulders- not someone else's. She also didn't like the idea of someone touching her feet so pedicures were out too.
My grandma's hair was usually a light brown, with hints of grey peaking through, and cropped really short because it was curly as well like my mom's hair. However, now that I think about it, I don't know if anyone ever taught her how to style her hair. She just kept the curls short and piled a bunch of Dippity Doo hair gel into her hair when she would style it.
Maybe this is a cycle, the more I think about this because I don't really know how to style my hair either. Even poker straight, the length it is at, I don't know what to do with it. It's too short for my usual pony-tail or bun, and it's too long for hair gel to fix it.
I still envy my mom's curls though. I wish I didn't have hair that did whatever it wanted. Maybe though, it will be my own daughter that will break the cycle that our family seems to be stuck in.
Thank you for reading tonight you guys.
