Historians and scholars have been all too eager throughout the ages to assert that there were no advanced civilizations on Earth prior to humanity's well documented ascent.

But there is a growing body of evidence to the contrary. Some of these artifacts are literal objects which have in built technologies that seem advanced for the time and which were discovered long before the modern understanding of those sciences existed.

Are these clues left over by a lost civilization? Let's further explore some of the most enigmatic discoveries that appear to suggest that humanity may have been far more advanced long ago than originally thought.

Megalithic Temple

Gobekli Tepe, in southeastern Turkey, is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites. Dating back more than 12,000 years, this megalithic temple complex predates the rise of cities and advanced tools, but is remarkably sophisticated in both design and execution.

The site contains massive stone pillars arranged in circular formations, many featuring intricate carvings of animals. What's most perplexing is that it was constructed by hunter-gatherers, who, at the time, had no known access to sophisticated tools or technologies, Gobekli Tepe challenges our notions of what the ancients were capable of and the nature of ancient architecture and religion.

Puma Punku The High Precision of Andesite

In Bolivia, the ruins of Puma Punku offer yet another testament to the ancient world's profounding prowess over nature. The site features massive stone blocks composed of andesite, a material that is particularly hard to work with.

The most fascinating component of Puma Punku is the accuracy in which these blocs were shaped and built. The stones are so precisely interlocked that not even a piece of paper can be placed between them.

The detail of such workmanship, which feels not unlike modern laser cutting, has confounded experts. The accuracy indicates a degree of technologicall sophistication much beyond what one would expect of a civilization from that time period.

Baalbek The Megalithic Colossus

In the Baalbek Temple complex in Lebanon, you can find some of the largest stone blocks ever used in construction. The largest of these megalithic stones, which is called the Trilithon, weighs approximately 1,200 tons an amount so monumental it's nearly unmovable in modern engineering, let alone the primitive tools in use back in when these were first quarried.

Others speculate that the building of such massive constructions may have been enabled by some unknown technology or technique, or even some supernatural force, whose true nature remains a mystery.

The Antikythera Mechanism Ancient Computation

On better news, we have also learnt about the Antikythera Mechanism, an ancient analogues computer yet another dark horse in the dark horse history of science.

Dating to over two thousand years, this ancient device was found in a shipwreck off the coast of Greece, formed of a complex network of gears and wheels that had been used to predict celestial occurrences, including eclipses.

The advanced level of this mechanism suggests a scientific knowledge and mechanical engineering far beyond the period it was created. Indeed, many academics suggest that the Antikythera Mechanism was the most sophisticated technological device of its class even centuries later in the medieval world.

The Piri Reis Map Antarctica Without Ice

One more interesting artifact that appears to provide clues about the ancient world is the Piri Reis map which was created in 1553. Remarkably, the map which shows the coastline of South America and part of Antarctica shows Antarctica without its ice sheet.

How could a map from the early 16th century correctly portray a landmass that wouldn't be discovered until well afterwards, and whose ice blanketed landscape is only now being mapped using contemporary technologies?

This curious fact has prompted some to wonder whether ancient civilizations possessed much more advanced geographical knowledge than we assumed.

Baghdad Battery Ancient Electric Technology

And similar to the so-called ''Baghdad Battery,'' another ancient artifact found in Iraq, casts more doubts on what human beings have possessed. A few scientists have even suggested that this ancient civilization understood how electricity worked, as they have discovered a clay jar that is more than 2,000 years old which was able to create a tiny electrical charge.

Although we are not exactly sure what the device was meant to do, if it was indeed used to generate a charge then this means that ancient engineers may have known about electrical principles long before they were put into practice in more recent times.
