The ruins of the ancient city of Valtoria had long been buried under centuries of dust and silence. Historians had dismissed it as nothing more than a minor kingdom lost to time. But when archaeologist Dr. Evelyn Carter uncovered a forgotten manuscript deep within the ruins, she realized history had lied. The manuscript told of an emperor who had ruled not with power, but with fear—an emperor the world had deliberately erased.
Evelyn’s heart pounded as she carefully translated the fragile text. It spoke of Emperor Kaelus, a ruler so feared that his name was banned from records, his statues shattered, his existence wiped from memory. The document detailed his rise—how he had once been a celebrated general who overthrew a corrupt king, only to become more ruthless than the tyrant he replaced. Legends claimed that he had dabbled in forbidden knowledge, seeking a power that could make him immortal.
The manuscript described his reign in chilling detail. He had ordered the construction of temples where rituals were performed in his name. He demanded absolute loyalty, and those who defied him vanished. But what was most disturbing was the account of his downfall. His own council, realizing his thirst for power would never end, betrayed him. But instead of killing him, they sealed him away beneath the very city he ruled.
As Evelyn delved deeper into the manuscript, she found an eerie passage. It warned that Kaelus had not died in battle, nor had he succumbed to age. Instead, his body had been locked inside a stone sarcophagus, bound by an ancient curse. The people of Valtoria, terrified of his wrath even after death, abandoned the city, ensuring he would never be found again.
Doubt gnawed at her, but as she and her team continued digging, they uncovered something chilling—a hidden chamber deep beneath the city. The entrance was marked with symbols of warning. No one had set foot inside for centuries. The air was thick with an unnatural stillness as they pried open the chamber’s heavy doors.
Inside, an ornate sarcophagus rested at the center. Unlike the others they had uncovered, this one was untouched by time. Its carvings depicted the final moments of Kaelus: betrayed by his closest advisors, bound by chains forged from cursed metal, and sealed away in eternal slumber.
But then Evelyn saw something impossible—the lid was slightly open.
Her breath caught as she stepped closer. Had grave robbers been here before them? Or worse… had something else happened?
A gust of cold air escaped the tomb, carrying whispers in a language long forgotten. Evelyn stumbled back, suddenly aware of the silence around her. Her team, just moments ago bustling with excitement, stood frozen, their faces pale.
Then, the ground trembled.
Dust fell from the ceiling as a deep rumble echoed through the chamber. The air grew heavy, pressing down on them as if the very ruins were trying to force them out. Then, from within the sarcophagus, something moved.
Evelyn gasped. That was impossible. Kaelus had been buried for over a thousand years. He couldn't be alive.
A hand, dark as obsidian and covered in intricate golden markings, emerged from the sarcophagus.
Panic surged through Evelyn’s chest. She turned to run, but the chamber doors slammed shut. The whispers grew louder, forming words she could almost understand. The team screamed as the sarcophagus lid slid open completely.
Then, silence.
When the dust settled, the chamber was empty. The sarcophagus stood open, and Kaelus was gone.
The forgotten emperor had returned.
