Amid India-Pakistan War Fears, Citizens Stockpile Food and Medicine

Many are stockpiling food and medicine amid fears of an Indo-Pak war
The political and military tensions between India and Pakistan have recently become a hot topic of discussion. Tensions along the border have been simmering for weeks. The diplomatic war of words and the spread of war-related news in the media have created a kind of anxiety among the general public. In view of this, many have started stockpiling essential items including food, water, and medicine in advance to ensure the safety and needs of themselves and their families.
Background to the Tension
The recent tensions were sparked by a series of firing incidents in the Kashmir border area. India has alleged that Pakistan-backed militants are again carrying out attacks across the Line of Control and Terrorism is spreading. On the other hand, Pakistan claims that India's military actions are provocative and that they are only taking self-defensive measures. Despite diplomatic interventions by the international community, there is no sign of de-escalation of the conflict between the two countries.

Panic in the public mind
This kind of tension is nothing new, but this time the panic has spread rapidly due to the rapid spread of news through social media and the press. Fears of a war-like event have spread among people in urban and rural areas, leading to increased crowds at food and medicine shops in border and important cities like Punjab, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi.
Several local media outlets reported that some major pharmacies in Delhi have completely run out of stock of some essential medicines. Inhalers, antibiotics,Painkillers and high blood pressure medications are in high demand. Along with this, sales of rice, pulses, powdered milk, drinking water, instant noodles, dry foods, etc. have also increased significantly.
Why this trend?
This tendency among people to hoard is actually born out of uncertainty and fear. No one knows how much the supply system will be disrupted if a war actually breaks out,How long will shops remain open or whether the transport system will remain operational? Past experiences, especially those following the Balakot airstrike in 2019, remain with many.
Many believe that the situation may not reach a point where a full-scale war will break out, but at least a state of emergency or curfew could lead to a shortage of food and medicine in border areas.
Administration's Role
Although the government has not yet declared martial law or issued any direct warnings, the local administration and police are requesting the public in some areas not to create unnecessary panic. They say,The situation is being monitored and the government will take action if necessary.
However, many have complained that the lack of any specific message from the government is increasing confusion. Some fake news and baseless rumors are also spreading on social media, which is making people more anxious.

Economic Impact:
Due to this panic, the prices of many products have suddenly increased. Some unscrupulous traders have taken advantage of this opportunity to increase the prices of products.Experts say that if this trend continues, there will be pressure on the supply chain and the burden of inflation on the general public will increase. This situation could create further crisis, especially for the lower class and marginalized people.
Future Directions
War is not good for anyone — it is good for India as well as for Pakistan. Both countries have internal economic and political challenges. Therefore, a diplomatic path to avoid war would be the most reasonable solution. However, until the situation stabilizes, the government should give a clear message to allay the panic among the common people and take concrete measures to maintain the supply of essential commodities.
