Wolfman
Wolfman marks the first film release of 2025 and the first film from this year that I got to see. Not only was it a pretty good horror film but it was a textbook perfect metaphor for generational trauma. The very small cast did a great job, and it was an excellent way to kick off the year. 2025 is going to be full of incredible movies just like the last few years have been. But hopefully this film is an indication that horror movies are about to improve, cause last year was a little rough.

David Lynch: The Filmmaker Who Broke All the Rules and Won
David Lynch isn’t just a filmmaker—he’s a world-builder, a dream-weaver, and a master of the subconscious. His work doesn’t simply entertain; it unsettles, provokes, and lingers in the mind long after the credits roll. Few directors have managed to create an artistic language so distinct, where the bizarre feels normal, the beautiful feels sinister, and the mundane feels extraordinary.

MaXXXine
As someone who has not seen X, but did see (and love) Pearl I was excited to see MaXXXine. I thought Mia Goth was absolutely robbed in awards season for Pearl, it was truly one of my favorite horror movies that I have ever seen. I expect that X and MaXXXine can’t be that different in quality (she said hopefully). It has taken me all year to get to something that was released in July, but I fell way behind on movies so here we go.

My Spy: The Eternal City
Dave Bautista is undeniably the best wrestler turned actor. He is genuinely incredible, that said he is in a deep danger of being typecast with the other wrestler/actors as an action star. Not that he isn’t good at it, he most certainly is. But he was the best part of Knock On The Cabin and he has an amazing range so I would love to see him do more softer things. All that out of the way he did get a sequel for My Spy which actually seems to balance the two things pretty well. So we are watching My Spy: The Eternal City.

David Lynch (January 20, 1946 - January 16, 2025)
“WHAT?” That was my reaction to the death of David Keith Lynch. I was at home on the one real day off I had this week between recovering from a very bad cold, teaching, prepping and cleaning up after the vacation that was time spent with my family. I was about to take the laundry out of the washer when I saw the message on Facebook that he had died and all I could think to say (or at least type) was one loud blurt from the heart. And it seems appropriate now that the person who put that notice up happened to be one of my former media students. She seemed to understand his importance not just to me, but to a host of us suburban weirdos who could see what was bubbling under the surface of all that brown and grey.
