September 18, 2025 marked the one year anniversary of the debut of Agatha All Along on Disney Plus. The nine-episode series, a spin-off of the hugely popular WandaVision, follows Agatha Harkness attempting to lead a Coven of misfit witches to a promised prize at the end of the legendary Witches' Road. It proved a surprise hit for Disney/Marvel, with many underestimating the audience the series would draw.

One of the elements that kept fans engaged week to week were the numerous plot twists along the way. Now, one year on, let's look back at a few of the biggest plot twists in Agatha All Along.

1. Sharon Davis/Mrs. Hart dies in the first Trial

Initially, viewers were unsure what to expect from the Witches' Road trials, or just how dangerous or deadly they were going to be. This soon changes when the Coven faces their very first trial, Jen's Potion trial, in the third episode of the series. While they pass the trial, the group's victory is bittersweet as they realise that Sharon, known to WandaVision viewers as Mrs. Hart, did not survive.

Sharon/Mrs. Hart, played by That 70's Show star Debra-Jo Rupp was a fan favourite in WandaVision, so her early death in Agatha All Along served as a warning to viewers that no-one was safe. To the Coven, Sharon's death is a cautionary tale on how dangerous the trials would be. Despite technically passing, they messed up, and will need to look out for each other better in the future.

2. How Billy survived the end of the Hex

Despite a few Red Herrings in early episodes hinting that he could be Agatha's lost son, Nicholas, or possibly an agent of Mephisto manipulating the Coven, no-one was overly surprised when the mysterious Teen's identity was revealed as Billy Maximoff, one of the twin sons of the Scarlet Witch. What was a surprise was just how Billy had survived the end of the Westview hex.

In a twist on the comic origin, in which Billy Maximoff's soul is simply reincarnated into Billy Kaplan, Agatha All Along's version of events has Billy's soul possess the body of William Kaplan, an Eastview Teenager killed in a Car Crash as the Hex was falling. It was a dark turn that had many fans feeling sorry for William's parents, who never knew that their real son was gone.

3. The Truth of Billy's Sigil

During the early episodes of Agatha All Along, there was a great deal about who had cast the sigil, a spell that hides an individual's name and other identifying information from other witches (including the spell-caster) on Teen/Billy. The sixth episode, 'Familiar By Thy Side', which follows Billy's story after WandaVision, reveals that Lilia Calderu, doing Tarot Readings at William Kaplan's Bar Mitzvah, cast the sigil after seeing Billy in William's future. Per the sigil's rules, she then immediately forgets she ever knew him.

After the sigil breaks, Lilia explains that she saw Billy had a tough road ahead, and deserved to be protected while he worked things out. After a few less altruistic theories about the sigil's origin, the reveal that Lilia had simply cast it out of kindness was a surprisingly wholesome twist.

4. Rio is Death

It was obvious from the beginning of the series that there was more to the backstory of Rio Vidal than simply being Agatha's Ex. Episode seven included the big reveal that Rio was the very first Green Witch, Aka the living embodiment of Death. This definitely explained a few things, like why Rio was already in the neighbourhood when the Coven needs to summon a new Green Witch at the beginning of episode four (she was collecting Sharon's soul) and her absence after Agatha's trial in episode five (She stayed behind to collect Alice).

Unfortunately, Rio's identity was spoiled ahead of time for some viewers via a Funko leak. However, this does not change the fact that the twist was handled well.

5. Sometimes, Boys Just Die

For most of Agatha All Along, a question mark hangs over the fate/whereabouts of Agatha's son, Nicholas Scratch. Namely, whether she did actually sacrifice him for the Darkhold.

She did not. Agatha genuinely loved her son. In the series finale, we learn that there was never any big mystery or event surrounding Nicky's death. He was simply born sickly in a time where little could be done about a such a thing, and therefore doomed to die young. If anything, this makes his death even more tragic.

6. The Truth About The Witches' Road

Sprinkled throughout Agatha All Along are hints that Agatha does not have as much knowledge of the Road as she should, despite supposedly being the only known survivor of the road and its trials. The final two episodes explain why this is. The Road never existed. 'The Ballad of the Witches' Road' was a song made up by Agatha and Nicky, which she later twists into a long-running con to drain the powers of other witches.

This means that, when Billy unknowingly creates the Witches' Road at the end of episode 2 (a fact not revealed in episode 8), Agatha knows the whole time that it isn't real. Aside from making Agatha a hugely committed grifter, the hints of Agatha knowing the truth, often hidden in the nuance's of Kathryn Hahn's performance only make the series more impressive overall.

Happy Anniversary, Agatha All Along! Hopefully the series remaining plot threads will be picked up at sometime in the future.
