'Agatha All Along': Agatha's Apparent Protectiveness Towards 'Teen' May Not Be A Good Thing

Watch out, kid.

WARNING! SPOILERS for Agatha All Along 1x03, 'Through Many Miles/Of Tricks and Trials'.

One of the key relationships in Agatha All Along is that between Agatha Harkness and the mysterious 'Teen' character, played by Heartstopper star Joe Locke. In fact, the series main plot was kicked off by Teen freeing Agatha from the Scarlet Witch's corrupt spell in order to request that she take him to the Witches' Road, in the hope of gaining the promised prize at the end.

By the recently aired third episode, in which Agatha and her Coven embark upon the first of many trials the Road is set to engage them in, some fans have noticed that Agatha seems to have become somewhat protective towards the Teen, only drinking the trial's poisoned wine to stop Teen from doing so. While some fans think this could be a sign of the character's potential for redemption, others think it hints at a more sinister plot on Agatha's part.

There are, unfortunately, a few signs that this could be the case.

As Agatha and Teen recruit members for the coven in Agatha All Along's second episode, Agatha regularly deflects questions about who Teen is, joking that he is a pet. Then, when the other witches discover the sigil spell that masks Teen's true identity from them at the beginning of episode three, Agatha immediately works to downplay the importance of solving the mystery behind Teen's identity and who exactly cast the sigil on him.

This behaviour is not like the Agatha Harkness we've come to know. Her original purpose for coming to Westview was to answer the question of how Wanda's spell over the town actually worked. It wasn't until after she'd answered that question that she shifted focus to stealing Wanda's powers.

Adding to this is the fact that Agatha's life as Agnes turned into a Detective drama. It was stated during WandaVision that the real personalities of those under Wanda's spell remained close to the surface. Clearly, Agatha Harkness loves a good mystery.

So why isn't she trying to solve the mystery around Teen?

Agatha has not got a great track record with children

Some fans believe Agatha's protectiveness towards Teen stems from him possibly reminding her of Nicholas Scratch, a son she apparently lost sometime prior to the series. A growing number even theorise that Teen is Nicholas. However, whether that bond would genuinely mean something to Agatha is up for debate.

In the past, Agatha has shown no qualms regarding potentially harming children. In episode eight of WandaVision, she forces Wanda into compliance by threatening the safety of Tommy and Billy Maximoff, and seems perfectly willing to kill the boys in the episode's final moments.

Adding to this, we see Jen pull Teen aside in the third episode of Agatha All Along, warning him not to trust Agatha, and informing him of a rumour in the Witch community that she sacrificed her own son to obtain the Darkhold.

What is Agatha really planning for Teen?

From the above information, fans have developed a theory that Agatha is not protecting Teen because she cares about him, but rather so she can use him as a human sacrifice at the end of the Witches' Road, potentially to the demon Mephisto. Her lack of interest in Teen's identity is a way to prevent herself from getting attached to him, while also hoping this will keep the rest of the coven from getting attached and trying to stop her if they discover her plan.

If Agatha is in fact planning to sacrifice Teen, it raises the new question of whether she will be able to go through with it. While Agatha is definitely not above putting herself first, both scenes so far dealing with the possible death/sacrifice of her son depict her as being somewhat distraught over it.

We are currently less than halfway throught the series. It is possible over the coming episodes that Agatha, in spite of her best efforts, will find herself bonding with Teen, ultimately choosing to protect rather than sacrifice him, and thereby find some sort of redemption.

But for now at least, Teen, and the rest of the coven, should probably watch their backs where Agatha Harkness is concerned.
