Richard Osman has a great take on Age in the short video above, and the song for this story is the Byrds' cover of "My Back Pages"

To Never Grow Old

In his song "Much Too Young", Garth Brooks says

"I'm much too young to feel this damn old".

Almost everyone over the age of thirty says something similar. My dad would not allow anyone to mention his age when he turned fifty; he is ninety now, and doing fine.

My body may take longer to recover if anything happens, but my life and brain are better today than yesterday. Bob Dylan says it perfectly:

"Ah, But I Was So Much Older Then

I'm Younger Than That Now"

To me, that means thanks to all my experiences, my enjoyment of life is more youthful than it was in my youth, which is ironic.

Learning and increasing my knowledge every day is my life. The years behind me have taught me many lessons and made me a better person. Raising a family and seeing them grow and raise families of their own shows my success and gives me pride.

Tomorrow will teach me more. Sharing my knowledge and discoveries makes me a better person. Being there for those in need is a trait of mine, and people appreciate it.

My shoulder is there for them if they need it.

They say that the giver sometimes gets more than the receiver, not sure if that is true, but it does make me feel good when they smile and thank me for whatever it is.

Life can be good for a very long time, though you need to put some effort into making it so. Sometimes people tell me they wish they could do the same as me; to be honest, they can. There are no superpowers in my armoury. My achievements can be done by almost anyone.

Ian Kilmister (Lemmy) once said

"If you feel you are too old to rock and roll, then you are"

And there is another philosophy that is on board with me, and you should take notice of.

Is this fiction? Some certainly is.

I will leave you to work out the truths and non-truths here.

Well done, Mike! I used to dread the idea of turning fifty, but now that I am fifty-three, I look at my children and grandchildren and smile. So much learned and much more learning to come.

Those last couple of lines make me feel as though I'm playing "two truths and a lie" here. Whether there's any fiction to this or not, the lessons still ring true. Well written article, Mike.

  • Absolutely agree, Mike. Life is what we make of it...a large part of success in anything is simply putting in the work!
