The Resources That Vocal Couldn't Be Bothered With

Some Useful Tips That May Help You On Vocal

By Mike Singleton 💜 Mikeydred Published 2 years ago 3 min read

Introduction

About four months back Vocal proposed that we should submit Creators' resources. I thought what a brilliant idea and submitted about a dozen ideas. I didn't expect them all to be taken up and would have been fine with a rejection, or a chat about my ideas, but there was nothing.

One of the problems was that your stories had to be left in draft format, which meant no reads. Three months is a long time to keep your Vocal stories in draft when they are effectively complete, so I decided to put them out there anyway.

I put another one out about raising issues with Vocal and then in a conversation on that piece mentioned that it would not be featured anywhere apart from in the Facebook Vocal Groups and as far as Vocal was concerned it would just sink and be forgotten.

Then I thought, why not collect them together in a single index piece that people can bookmark for reference? If Vocal won't do it, then I will. I hope that you find this resource list useful. Please let me know what you think in the comments.

This was my initial piece when I thought something really useful was going to happen and it has the link to the resource submission.

The following is a list of the pieces that I submitted, in no particular order. Only one is in Resources on Page three here.

And this is the story

The Vocal Editor can be a pain at times so I wrote this on actually using it beneficially.

A short critique of Vocal's Search which can be very powerful if used properly

A few pointers for making a little extra coffee money from your Vocal stories

Reciprocity benefits us all, giving us ideas and inspiration while making our friends a little money from when we read and share their Vocal Stories. I know some do not see me as a creator, just someone to ask when they need some info, but that does not stop me from writing and the feedback I get from my friends and audience makes me feel very appreciated.

Quickedit is only for Vocal+ members but it is an absolute must-have for Vocal Creators. I particularly need it because I make so many mistakes.

When I started programming from Littlewoods in 1980 I was having issues and worried that I would lose my job. A brilliant genius called Sean Pond taught me some construction methods that completely transformed my ability. I mentioned this to someone who told me this:

"Oh he's not that good, he is always screwing up, but he fixes his problems so that people only see the working results, so I suppose he is a flawed genius"

That will do for me.

Sometimes finding something to write about can be a problem. You can always just wait for inspiration to happen or a new Vocal Challenge to come along. Vocal do have a lot of pieces on prompts for your creative writing, but this is a piece that I wrote on the subject.

I do try and push the benefits of being a Vocal member in other writing groups but often people are just focused on their own personal platform of Facebook group. Although Vocal has its flaws it is still an excellent platform. I just wish they would take notice of suggestions from Creators.

This is the piece with the conversation that inspired this story.

I place most of my resource pieces in FYI and you can read them all here:

The shorter pieces are in the Vocal Writers Community

I'm very sad to read in the comments that Vocal has not shown appreciation for you. It's strange that genuine desire to improve something can be confused by some people as being highly critical. Ridiculous. Vocal has a lot to improve on, and I wouldn't be surprised if some creators would help out as volunteers just to get things going. It is so frustrating to hear them promise on changes and deliver so much less than what they claim. Hoping things continue to improve in this regard

Great insights! I agree with Dharrsheena - Vocal should bring you on as a paid employee.

  • Thank you for the pillar post, Mike. My only concern is how will I find it among 1800-2000 & growing stories, lol.

  • Vocal should be paying you for doing their job for them. I don't know what we would do without you. Thank you so much! 🥰🥰🥰

Great advice Mike. I always refer ppl to Resources, but it is a lot to wade through. Bringing some to the forefront is always helpful.

    Great compilation!

  • Thank you for helping us less seasoned Vocal writers; this is as fabulous as an old roll-a-deck system. New stuff is hard for old cats like me.
