Chapter 5: Food for Thought
Chapter 5 Jacob woke the next morning with a stuffy head. A cramp in his back made him stir, dislodging the bible he had been reading. The couch, littered with discarded kleenex was made more lumpy than usual by the laptop pinned between him and the cushions. Uneaten take-out was perched precariously on a stack of articles on the coffee table and somewhere he could hear the muffled sound of mobile phone notifications.

Danny slept very fitfully. His dreams were a mired, swirling fog, blending and melding chaotically one into the other. He saw the bonfire again, and figures - hooded and cloaked - chanting all around. There was a great stone table, too, in the midst of a circle of even greater stones, and a full harvest moon shining above. Hideous creatures swiped and clawed at him from the darkness, threatening to snuff out his light. He felt as if he were in a cold, dark sea, barely keeping his head above the surface before another crashing billow of darkness tried to push him under. Suddenly there was an incredibly bright light all around him, voices calling out in fear and agony, while the shadows fled from the flames spreading to the trees. Danny thought he heard a voice, gentle but more powerful than all the universe, ringing through the burning pines.

We fed the borkas and had a good time . We’re not really supposed to feed them but some of us in the village do . A lot of them have become dependent , so we kind of have to . Whenever the numbers get high the butchers , hunters , and other villagers just kill a few for free meat . It’s kind of dark when I think about it . I would never bring it up to Goldy though . I’d imagine it to be a mood killer .

Chief Maxus walked out of the room and left me alone in the room with Goldy again . She was still sleeping though . So I decided to get up and stretch for a little bit . I tested my readiness to fight while I thought about what I’d do . The Chief was right . My best bet would be for me to woo Goldy as much as I can . As to soften the blow for when I have to leave . I still don’t know if I should tell her when she wakes up , or at the end of the day .

After I enjoyed my meal I dozed off into some of the best sleep I’ve had in ages . I even had vivid dreams again , but it was a simple one . Just me , my friends and Goldy exploring a sunny country side with exotic wildlife and vegetation . We were just wandering around having fun with the sun shining in our faces . The wind was a gentle breeze , it was a perfect compliment to the suns radiant warmth . I just had an enigmatic feeling during the entire dream . As if everything in the world was at balance . It might've been my minds way of telling me something . That even after defeat . Everything will be okay . As long as I can adventure with the ones I love . Sunshine and great weather are just the added bonuses .

When they first walked into my room we all smiled at first . We couldn't hold back the joy of seeing each others faces after losing in a battle so bad . Then the smiles faded and we started to talk . Bulls Eye was the first one to break the silence out of us three . “ Man , we sure got our asses handed to us by that robed guy . It turns out that we were all saved by the village chief ! “ That statement surprised me , the village chief was tough but he wasn’t necessarily known for his fighting capabilities . Then while he was laughing out loud and noticing the shock on my face . Bulls Eye then continued on to explain . “ It turns out that the guy loved the shape of the chiefs head ! He told the chief he loved his head but that he hated our buildings for having imperfect angles . He then ran off and left the village without saying another word . We got beat up by a weirdo guys , we were completely annihilated .”

I woke up in the village hospital . Damn I thought . I’m getting tired of having to wake up in random places . I was glad to see Goldy was in my room . Other than that I was still confused as to what was going on . Seeing her made me feel okay though . Then I remembered that I was in the middle of a fight . Not anymore though , the last thing I remembered was me getting ready for an attack . I must have been knocked out . I was relieved that he didn’t kill me though . I still had so many questions and concerns . The first words that I said to Goldy as she smiled from noticing me waking up was . “ Thanks for being here for me . I have been thinking about you for days . My journey has been long and tough . My friends that were fighting besides me though , how is Bulls Eye and John doing ? “ .
