Repo Man
Repo Man is a cult camp classic from 1984, starring Emilio Estevez, along with a stellar lineup of character actors: Harry Dean Stanton, Sy Richardson, Tracey Walter, and Fox Harris. Fox Harris, in particular, is unforgettable as a crazed man driving around in a Chevy Malibu with dead aliens in the trunk. His character wears sunglasses with one lens missing, which somehow makes him even more unsettling. Harris, by the way, appeared in some truly oddball cinematic gems, like Stephen Sayadian’s Dr. Caligari (1989) and Fred Olen Ray’s Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988). If that doesn’t set the tone for Repo Man, nothing will.

Chainsaw Man
Denji’s got a serious problem: he’s broke—like, beyond broke. Worse than your average homeless person. He’s starving most days, barely scraping by hunting down “devils” in some weird alternate Tokyo, where these hellions run wild like there’s no one in charge. To quote a line from Slayer, “the devils are free to roam,” and Denji’s barely holding his own in this hellscape. Not that he has much choice—he’s stuck paying off his dead father’s debts to some sleazy Yakuza who don’t even have the decency to treat him like a person. They’ve got him on a leash, keeping him desperate, dangling survival in front of him like a carrot.

History of the World Part 1
Orson Welles opens History of the World, Part I with that iconic voice, delivering the kind of grandiose, overly serious narration he's famous for. But this time, instead of some high-minded historical documentary, he's setting the tone for Mel Brooks' riotous parody of history itself. The contrast between Welles' weighty delivery and the absurdity unfolding on screen is the first of many jokes in this film. Immediately, we’re introduced to a group of Neanderthals engaging in some very prehistoric frooging, bumping, and grinding. It’s a direct parody of 2001: A Space Odyssey, but where Kubrick went for awe and mystery, Brooks leans into the lewd and ludicrous. These cavemen aren’t interested in the mysteries of the monolith; they’re simulating a variety of sexual acts, reveling in crude humor, and setting the tone for the irreverent ride through history to come.

It’s crude, it’s cheap, and it’s completely hilarious in the most messed-up way possible.

Ted Bundy
The image of Ted Bundy getting up in the morning and acting like a baboon in front of the mirror seems strange in the context of this movie, which presents the infamous serial killer as the handsome, charming Angel of Death with an affable, easy, thoroughly deceptive, and deadly nature. The movie focuses particularly on his relationship with his much-maligned girlfriend "Lee" (Boti Ann Bliss), presented here as a needy, clueless young woman willing to take Ted's mentally abusive, narcissistic behavior, all the while never suspecting that the man who wants her to "pretend to be dead" while they make love might not be who he appears to be.

Friday the Thirteenth Part 3
Friday the Thirteenth Part 3 was a hugely successful slasher-cum-splatter flick that knocked E.T.'s wrinkled alien ass off the top of the box-office turdpile back around the time I was developing pubes. All of that is more information than you need obviously but, suffice it to say, it was the El Numero Uno monster rave-'em-up right behind the ill-starred, (even cursed, some say), Poltergeist, back in 1982.

Robot Carnival
Robot Carnival is a brilliant animated anthology of anime films focusing on robotics and artificial intelligence. Released in 1987, it has only become more timely with the rise of AI as a daily reality in our lives. However, there’s nothing preachy or overly serious about Carnival: it is pure sci-fi pleasure, reminiscent of the earlier Heavy Metal anthology, though with a different fluidity and graphic design.
