The Platinum Locket
Dearest Belilia, How are you, my darling? I want to know if you planted those African violets around the garden. I can just smell the aroma of the flowers coinciding with the softness of the cocoa butter on your skin. I flew my second to last mission yesterday. As a newly minted first lieutenant, I ‘ve shot down as many as I could do. It’s so frigid around these places. Some of us have dubbed the area the “Frozen Chosin.” My plane fogs up so much, it’s difficult to see my targets. But I prevail. As a lieutenant in the first integrated sector of the United States military, it feels right. This is one of the only sectors that needs to fully embrace anyone ready to fight.

Businesswoman Chapter 48
“We’re here on Delaware’s Public Radio Control with Businesswoman and Businessgirl. They have been fighting for what they call the most envied sector of our economy, the businesspeople. Thank you both for coming here this morning,” Susan Convent chimed.

Stevedores
Me Dearest Gertrude, Hello, my love. I’m a colonel, but I might as well be amongst the enlisted ranks. We fought hard in the Argonne but these white men still don’t show respect. I’m not just talking about saluting, they offer no aid or even speech when they look my way. In the battle, the Germans called us “Black Devils.” You will be proud of me as the French honored my men and me with a Croix de guerre. It doesn’t matter. We now work as the stevedores. We’re on the docks unloading flour. I have to continue to remind myself that I’m still part of the war effort.

Pursuer
Dear Barnum, It’s cold here in Delaware. What’s it like over there? I remember you saying it’s super humid and the place has bugs the size of TV clickers. I know you like the heat. How'd you like my last letter? I know you like that black lace that I made for you. I just do. I know you’re commanding a small platoon of mostly blacks. As a black first lieutenant, is it tough? Does it ever get better? I know I’m asking a lot. I just want to know how you’re feeling. What’s it like to be in that war path? There I go again. Let me tell you about life over here. Thank you for sending the money in our last correspondence for the rent and the utilities. This house creaks and yawns like an old man.

Businesswoman Chapter 45
A hand extended and shook those of Loreen and Lisa. “This is a great opportunity for you. It’s a talk on leadership and self-esteem,” Richmond Nott explained. He had slick black hair that clung to his scalp, showing some signs of gray.

Warriors of Loving
My Dearest Audrella, I thank you for the cloves you had enclosed in your last missive. That permitted me great joy in ingesting the aromas of such spices. Now is the time where I must depart from happy feelings. The aggressors have shown themselves to be quite despicable in their deportment. Some of the Continental Army have shown themselves to be rather hostile, too. They don’t salute me as a colonel, the white men. They snicker and chortle every time I come into view. My men, however, salute me and say good morning or any other time of day and “Colonel Redd.” They can take my admonishments. They receive commands and carry out orders with the strictest discipline.

Businesswoman Chapter 44
Acrimony existed in the air. Loreen had been summoned to the studio of a classical music composer named Philant Barney. He crossed his hands in front of his piano. Then he saw Loreen out of the corner of his eye. Then he began to play. The lilting notes and precision of every chord change lifted Loreen’s spirit. Philant slammed on the keys in a sign of defiant dissonance. He turned to her and offered a crooked smile.

Smartystan. Content Warning.
That steady sound of the wheels of the skateboards against the pavement created a symphony. Go and Chanda ventured out into the streets to relieve tension, complete tricks, and bond. Their destination came up soon. A vacant lot uptown permitted them the liberty to glide on their decks and make skateboarding great again.
