The properties on the West Side of Wilmington, Delaware looked worse than dilapidated, if that’s possible. Their crumbling structures looked like jagged, broken teeth. The bricks had tumbled into a lot occupied only by refuse including plastic, syringes, and shattered bottles of liquor.

Dust did not know Mayor Geoff Goff’s office. The immaculate decor and meticulously arranged photos with dignitaries, gifts from overseas pervaded the space. He stood and shook hands with Loreen and Lisa. Chief of police Marza Haven also shook their hands.

On the dashboard of her brainchip, Dr. Frampton saw a message zip into view. There was no information on the sender. The note simply read, “They’re trying to sabotage the corporation.” She didn’t know who this “they” was. She didn’t know exactly how someone or some people could be detracting from her company. A frown descended on her countenance. She walked the halls with synths and learned machines ambling around her. The journey to her office felt like a rough and tumble excursion with all the thoughts racing through her head.

In the Goulding, the two women just looked at the fields. Loreen and Lisa surveyed the corn and wheat swaying in the wind. Sussex County, Delaware stayed on their minds. Everything was like a fogginess even though the day was as clear as pharmaceutical, traditional contact lenses. They came to a house that had been designated a historical site.

The racket looked like a broken banjo. The superstar Wanda Twyman had been disabled by the sideline. Her arms and legs had been broken.
