The final day of the library in Newark, Delaware felt like a beautiful occasion tinged with a bit of melancholy. Loreen had spent nights between the site and Wilmington to complete her degrees. Lisa held group sessions to launch her firms. The two women saw some people milling about at the entrance.

“They’re trying to make this a private library! But I guess that would suit you both well!” Garna Wellsbury remarked with malice. Loreen smiled.

“It does best suit us and you, too. There should be no government funding of places like the library because that’s not the State’s role,” Loreen explained with an iciness and a calmness that all at once chilled and comforted Garna.

“Well, who’s going to pay for it?”

Lisa replied, now. “People like those that did in most places in the nineteenth century. Industry titans and local small businesses will allow this institution to thrive.”

“Okay, so will I have to pay to rent a film or use the database or use a study room?” Garna asked with sincerity creeping into her small voice.

“No,” Loreen reassured. “You’ll be able to access all of the various amenities including books,” she said wryly. “Only when the new library is built will it be a space for performance, broadcasting, and other activities. And books, of course.”

Garna’s wheels in her head began to turn.

“You’re not saying all of this because you’re so wealthy?”

“I am most certainly saying this because I have earned my funds. We’re both going to sit on the board of directors. I will ensure that the library will not be on the backs of taxpayers but individuals like ourselves who have the means. We will hold the new structure as a pillar of the community once more.”

“That actually sounds good.”
