Peace in the Storm
Peace in the Chaos Ryan and I stood at the edge of the massive lake and watched the distant sailboats on the horizon as they drifted over the crystal surface of the water. “That looks so great! We should go try it, Linn. I remembered seeing signs for boat rentals at the entrance to the park!”

PomPoms & Perfumed Shoes. Top Story - April 2021.
I look around my messy room with irritation as I search for my cheer shoes. My Cheer coach is really nit-picky about us dressing in very specific ways, and these shoes are part of the uniform. I gleefully shout in relief when I find the other shoe hiding under a pile of dirty clothes. I start thinking about the cheer routines we planned for today, and then my cheeks heated as I remembered that today’s basketball game would include Adam Parker, my super crush. Suddenly I check my reflection in the mirror, making sure my frizzy curls are somewhat manageable and cute. Everything looks fine, but then an odd thought hits me when I look back at those white shoes with our school colors painted on one side….

Regretful Notewriters Anonymous
Overeager Notetaker I sat in 3rd period, waiting for my best friend Natalie to get in her seat so I could give her the hilarious and over the top note I’d written in History. I tended to be considered more reserved with my humor, but with the topic in class being on the boring side, I found myself drifting off to a silly world where my usually contained emotions were put on display for my best friend. I remember looking back at the words and chuckling as everyone coursed through the room loudly as they got to their seats.

Remembering Mr. Wright
I sit down, grabbing a glass of merlot, sipping it with a distant look in my eye. I try to push off the ache in my gut at the loss of Ben… and I keep reminding myself that it’s not a loss. I knew sooner than tonight that he wasn’t the one… but I’m closer to 35 than I was yesterday, and with each day I come closer, the more I seem to settle in every aspect of my life. Ben was just another example of settling… he wasn’t any of the things I really wanted, not when I really think about it. He was decent enough, with a decent enough sense of humor, with a decent enough job, and decent enough at… well, other things. But, since when was ‘decent enough’ really enough?

Unexpected Soulmate
I sit at the too-nice table, inside the too-exquisite restaurant that I would never be caught in ordinarily, tiredly staring at a guy who thinks he is God’s gift to women… and probably God’s gift to the whole world. I have listened to him prattle on and on about stock options, and his freaking red Ferrari, and his daddy the Governor….

The Hero's Crucible
“Madeline Lane?” The announcer calls my name, and instantly a shiver of panic goes through my bones. One hundred and eighty others have already been called forward today, and yet none of them were chosen, so I’m optimistic I won’t be one of them either.

Not Waiting for Prince Charming
Once upon a time, a girl waited for her prince charming to come along, but instead of reflecting on the fact he’d yet to find her, she focused on her independence. This girl thrived on making her own decisions while her married friends laughed and whined about not telling their husbands about their latest purchase. This girl simply smiled back at them and started to sing to herself, Cheap Thrills sang by the Bellas from Pitch Perfect. This girl didn’t need money to have fun, but at least she got to make the decisions for herself.
