Going For A Hike
Hiking is when you take a long, vigorous walk through the countryside using trails or footpaths. People have been hiking since 125 AD. Around 47.86 million people will participate in this on the 193,500 miles of trails available to the public. Hiking is an easy, fun activity that can be enjoyed by those of all ages. People hike for many reasons, from taking a break from electronics to improving their overall health. Hiking burns 550 calories an hour. Many people who hike regularly tend to have a calmer and peaceful life. They tend to sleep better at night and be more refreshed during the day. There are 63,328 grocery stores operating in the U.S. today, creating a 758 billion dollar industry. A grocery store, or supermarket, is a food service retail store that primarily sells a general range of food products, among other things. Some grocery stores specialize in foods from a particular nationality. What we think of today as grocery stores began in 1916 in Memphis, Tennessee. It was called Piggly Wiggly. The average person spends 53 hours a year in one. That’s roughly 41 minutes a trip. Going to the grocery store is an activity we all have to do whether we like it or not. Pickling is when foods have been fermented in brine, vinegar, or another salty solution. It is a food preservation method that dates back to Ancient Mesopotamia and India. Many foods can be pickled, like cucumbers, eggs, peaches, and beets, just to name a few. They are an integral part of many types of cuisines, adding zest to a lot of dishes. Today, pickles are considered a widely popular snack food with Americans eating 20 billion of them a year. The Department Of Agriculture estimates the average person eats 8.5 lb of pickles a year. Words Do Hurt. Top Story - November 2023.
Today is anti-bullying week. 20% of students will be bullied by the time they turn eighteen. Bullying is defined as any unwanted behavior by another person or group that creates a power imbalance and is repeated multiple times. It is seen as youth violence and is an adverse childhood experience. Bullying comes in many forms; there is physical bullying that involves tripping or kicking. Verbal bullying involves name-calling. Spreading rumors is considered relational/social bullying. Cyberbullying is harassing someone over technology and lastly damaging someone else’s property. A caregiver is a person who helps an individual with activity and support in their daily lives. Caregivers perform all sorts of tasks, from shopping to bathing. Overall, they provide for another person’s basic needs and social care. Almost a third of the adult US population is a caregiver. Happy birthday to the US Marines! Today, they are 248 years young. In the US, there are currently around 177,200 active marines and 32,400 in reserves. Marines will go through 13 weeks of rigorous training to become the world’s most elite fighting force. They are required to be knowledgeable, team players, physically fit, and well-rounded individuals. As an amphibious force, they are trained to fight on land and sea. They are the first fighting force to hit the ground in any conflict. They are stationed all over the world to be ready to go at a moment’s notice. Time To Vote
In 2022, there were 168.42 million voters in the United States. Voting is a rite of passage for many, being the first adult decision they’ll make. Almost everyone over 18 can vote, with a few exceptions. There will be 116,990 polling places scattered throughout the country collecting votes. Because of this, there will be long lines in these places. With security questions regarding mail-in ballots increasing the urge to vote in person, these lines will probably be longer than we’ve seen them before. Surviving The Big Wave
A tsunami is a series of deadly ocean waves caused by an underwater earthquake, landslide, volcanic eruption, or meteor impact. Any event that displaces a large amount of water will result in a tsunami. On average, the world will experience at least two of them causing minor damage to the coastal areas they hit with a devastating ocean-wide one occurring every fifteen years. They can happen in any ocean with 80% of them occurring in the Pacific Ocean around the “Ring Of Fire” region. Tsunamis kill more than 50,000 people in these minor events every year, and in some cases millions, if it’s big enough. November 5th is Tsunami Awareness Day, so here are some survival tips you can use to survive these gigantic waves.
