Nudity and Tattoos
Growing up in the Soviet Union, until I turned 17, the three of us – my mom, me and my younger sister – lived in what was called “institutional housing” provided by soviet institutions to their employees. It meant that you could live in it only for as long as you work for the institution. My father was a police officer who got our institutional one-bedroom apartment and when he walked out on my mother, she had to quit her beloved job of a dressmaker and work for the police, not to lose the housing. She had worked at their telecom center until she retired in 2002.

Restless Hands' Projects - 1
During the second summer of the pandemic, I picked up a new hobby – refurbishing and refinishing wood furniture. In the first pandemic summer of 2020, I polished my life-long knitting skills and art of knitting without patterns, just from my head and hunch, which I wrote about here on Vocal as well. I loved discovering new natural yarns and experimenting with them, but then I decided I needed something completely new to do. Something that years later I could boast about, “I’ve picked up a new hobby during the pandemic.”

Pigeon on a Mission
Hungarian Prime-minister Viktor Orbán has done a lot of travel in a short period of time since Hungary became the EU Council rotating chair for six months on July 1, 2024. He calls it a “peace mission.” His X (Twitter) timeline has it all documented in glossy propaganda terms using a lot of euphemisms and strong imagery.

The Vending Machine - 3
Ashton didn’t drink the “solve global warming” Coke for three days. He knew that procrastination was probably not the best approach, but he just couldn’t bring himself to drink it and set off another calamity. In his head, he was running all possible scenarios of what could go wrong with this option, as he now knew that the machine would somehow pervert everything. So he held off. In these three days, the world was engulfed in an unprecedented heat wave bringing the wildfires, drought killing all the crops, and torturing people with heat exhaustion. Ashton had the dreams of flying Coke again, telling him “You must drink it.”

The Vending Machine - 2
Next morning, the global news was buzzing with the coverage of the Atlantis and the mostly finished housing. No one seemed to know how this new development was built there and why. News reports had not a single mentioning of the homeless solution disaster.
