How Will I Approach The Vocal Fall Poetry Series?

I'll Do It My Way

Introduction

Vocal's multi-challenge drops still disturb me. Although theer is no pressure to do them all at once, and we have plenty of time, there is something in my mind saying that I need to get these done.

The details of the latest challenges are here, and they are all poetry, a dozen of them.

At the moment, there are thirteen open challenges, because the final poetry one from the last drop is still live.

My Strategy

I usually step back and take on one task at a time. I do the same thing when I have to deal with multiple work tasks, and I always manage them through to completion.

I don't know why I get slightly panicky because I know these are well within my grasp.

Because they are all poetry, I have a natural aversion to posting more than one poem at a time.

The first challenge requests a haiku, and people will flood this because a haiku is very short. That challenge is here:

I have placed my entry in this and already entered the one from the last Challenge drop. I have since written and published four non-poems.

That is going to be my strategy.

One challenge poem a day, and then other stories unrelated to the challenges. The other stories might be poems, but not for the challenges.

I am looking to use the Sestina and Terza Rima forms where the form is not specified, but I will only enter each one once.

While I can usually enter multiple fiction entries, poems are different for me, so it will just be the dozen entries.

Conclusion

Thank you for reading, and I hope it has given you some food for thought.

The music is Sir Christopher Lee's heavy metal take on "My Way", and is my most viewed YouTube slideshow with 130,000 views.

    As usual, reading your stories has proven to be a very educational endeavor. I read this post a few days ago and thought, what the hell is Terza Rima? So, I did some research and decided to use it for my submission for the Road Drops Here Challenge. I was going to write it Free Verse, but after your other post about Free Verse dominating the Poets Community I felt obliged to try something more structured. I don't usually ask others to read my work, but I hoped you might want to see what you inspired. I would love some feedback since it is my first attempt with this style if you are willing. https://shopping-feedback.today/poets/conquering-the-hill%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3Cstyle data-emotion-css="w4qknv-Replies">.css-w4qknv-Replies{display:grid;gap:1.5rem;}

Whew, I thought it was just me that was overwhelmed by so many Challenges all at once! Nice to see your thought process and strategy. I actually created a spreadsheet to help keep me focused.

I am totally overwhelmed...still recovering from the last batch. Taking time to relax my brain. My strategy is to write when motivation arrives. It is rather sleeping now. Poetry cannot be forced.

  • I get overwhelmed each time I see Vocal drop multiple challenges at once. And sometimes, people publish multiple pieces in a day for these challenges and that overwhelms me too πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

That's a great strategy. I'm starting with the ones I find the easiest, then I might go back and work on the more challenging ones later. I don't consider myself much of a poet, so I probably won't enter many of these challenges.

    I think you'll be fine...

Seems like a reasonable approach. It’s definitely a more structured approach than what I have, which is to just write whatever strikes me when it strikes me and hope everything turns out for the best. Good luck on the challenges!

Good luck, Mike! I know you are good with basically all poetry formats and genres so I hope at least one of them lands you a win. And this is already a winning strategy!
