Conquering the Hill
A very literal entry for the Road Drops Here Poetry Challenge

The scent of hot tar warmed from July’s sun
Clung to my nostrils and hung in the air
Waking my mind to prepare for the fun
~
Joy filled laughter rang out everywhere
Promising adventures at every turn
But something inside whispered wait, beware
~
My tummy did clench, my belly did churn
As I peered over the edge of the drop
My heart started to pound, my lungs to burn
~
I wanted to go but how would I stop
Once I let gravity take the control
Wasn't I safer up here on the top
~
Adventure called back, caution’s not the goal
It's time to let go and enjoy the ride
Conquer the hill, it's so good for the soul
~
Against my shirt, my sweaty palms I dried
Then grasped tight onto the pink rubber grip
Took a deep breath to calm the nerves inside
~
Foot on the pedal, prepared for the trip
I rose up from the striped banana seat
Step down right foot, pick up left, this is it
~
Leaving the top, my heart skipped a beat,
Then it soared high as I flew down the street

AJ, this is stunning. I love the progression from tension to its release. Love how much I felt every bit - not maybe nice, but the way you conveyed it was incredible. Great work, my friend.
Ah, that felt so therapeutic and wonderful. Loved your poem!
Such a vivid ride down memory lane.
