Their Own Words – A Better Man (Part Four)
When I first sat down to compile my memories of Craig into this story I really had no idea where this journey was going to take me. I did mention previously that he had once asked if I was going to write a book about him and I have actually been thinking about that lately. Maybe I should write a complete novel that is based on his life? There certainly seems to be enough material for one and somehow I think it would be fitting. I can also think of quite a few young actors that would be excellent choices to play him in the movie version of his life! :)

1st Day 8th
1st Day 8th We doing what now? I was not into this day. I was forced to leave my grandparents, my cousin had been 3 doors away my “entire life”, and my sisters and godmother’s were within 20 minutes of the house in which I was built. I was not prepared or even knowledgeable about this move. Wasn't consulted, informed, or even dreamed that my mother would just up and marry some man that she, just months ago, wouldn't even accept his calls.

What I Love Most About Philadelphia?
What do you love most about living in Philadelphia? By John Matthews Last year, a woman whose acquaintance I made at a conference in Chicago was in Philadelphia on business for the first time and called me to see if I would take her and some friends for a tour of the city. Born and raised in New York City, she really didn't know much about Philadelphia, except that the Phillies beat out her beloved Mets for a chance to play in the World Series, only to lose to her city's Yankees. I remember her asking me what it was like to be born and raise in a small town. After reminding her that Philadelphia is in fact the fifth-mostpopulous city in the United States, I politely pointed out that my city is a wonderful major world metropolis with a small town feeling. Philadelphia, popularly known to fellow Philadelphians as a "City of Neighborhoods," is what I love most about our city. Its diversity serves as a reminder that all are created equal, which says a lot about the city where our great American democracy was conceived.

DAKOTA’S HEART First Crush by V.K. Hubbard The alarm sounded incessantly jarring Dakota from sleep. She pushed the stop button on her phone to quiet it as she swung her legs over the side of the bed. Sitting up, she ran a hand through her long, auburn hair, moving it out of her face. Tonight, was the senior prom. She glanced over at the dress, still in its plastic bag, on the back of her door. Sighing, she wished she weren’t going with Jacob. She really didn’t have a choice not to. They had been going together all through high school. It was expected. No one knew they had actually broken up right before Christmas. She sighed again getting out of bed. Oh well, she thought. I have to keep up appearances. She was also aware Jacob wasn’t happy about their situation either. Throwing on her clothes, Dakota headed down to the barn. She figured she had time to get in a quick ride on Queenie before she had to shower and go to her appointments for her hair and makeup. She was lost in her thoughts as she entered the barn. She squealed when Audrey came up behind her.

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO OUR CAUSE
My man Martin. He was the definition of “powerful” as it pertains to whipping up Black votes and stirring up some GOOD TROUBLE back in his time, and as he said in that candid speech on that faithful day in Washington D.C. on August 28th, 1963, I Have A Dream. It might as well have been his John Hancock on the bill Lyndon Johnson signed into law, The Civil Rights Act of 1964, because it was all of his hard work, organizing power, and efforts, to which the FBI assassinated him for. I feel like I’m a part of Martin’s dream. I see myself as a bit of Chairmen’s Fred Black Panther Party and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference members. I use my voice for change, for good trouble, maybe sometimes a little too much trouble, but speaking truth to power in 2022 feels like my man Martin….never even existed. I mean, what kind of crap are we even talking about right now, ACCESS TO VOTING RIGHTS!??! Cue my girl Stacey Abrams. She has been this generation’s version of Dr. King’s public fight to demand Black access to the southern ballots. I do tons of history about America, in my pursuits of understanding and educating Black America. I really am not sure which tribe I come from but here, we don’t even have time to go back to learn, to hear the stories of our truth, to find whatever it was that was stolen from Africans who were brought to America through slave migration because we are still fighting to be free. Y’all know we just got Juneteenth in 2021 right. Lincoln has been dead for decades.

Coming Out Never Ends
To me, life is everything we choose to make of it. We wake up and most days we have a plan. And on those days that are unplanned we wing it, because I mean, what else are we supposed to do other than keep on moving. We often forget that we hold the key to our happiness. We often forget that whether the sun shines or not there will still be evil out in the world. Acceptance shouldn't be as hard as most people make it. Just be a conscious, loving, and caring human, right?
