Golden Handcuffs
The term Golden Handcuffs was first recorded in 1976. Chances are you've heard of a golden handshake, which is a particularly tempting severance agreement offered to an employee in an effort to induce the person to retire early. Golden handcuffs is used to describe a situation in which someone is offered a special inducement to stay. Golden handcuffs are also defined as a collection of financial incentives that are intended to encourage employees to remain with a company for a stipulated period of time. Golden handcuffs are offered by employers to existing key employees as a means of holding onto them as well as to increase employee retention rates.

A new beginning
A fresh start is always a scary idea. Being far from home for so long makes it difficult to imagine how it'll be when you go back. I was born and raised in the United States, but living in Puerto Rico for 10+ years will definitely cause some culture shock when relocating back to the States. This is especially true when that move is to the Midwest.

The Anger of Youth
Start“The Anger of Youth” While listening to Roger Daltry belting out The Who’s “Substitute” one day it dawned on me that he must’ve been poor as a youth just like I was. The song came straight from the anger of his youth in London, England. Mine was spent dreaming of dirt bikes… specifically getting one of my own. When I pedaled out of the gate at my first real BMX track on my crappy CYC Stormer, the kind with the rear foot brake, I had no idea how much of a dork I must’ve look like. I ignored the audible comments from the side as real racers uttered, “He’s gonna crash…I give him half a lap, etc.”

Getting To The Root Of Unhappiness
Many people live in clutter, emotionally eat themselves into overweight, live in debt, hate their jobs and otherwise live unhappy lives, unable and seemingly unwilling to change. Why? What do these have in common? What is the core issue?

Words to live by
So much power in the words we hear and especially in the words we say. We have learned from childhood upward to speak mantras, cliches, old wives tales, and such. Some are good, some just need to be squashed. You are tailoring your life and now you must be super selective in the words you say. Some words give strength and life, others drain and kill.

LIVE NOW.
Do not live for the future. This does not mean that we should live our life in a reckless manner. What this means is that tomorrow is not promised. From once we are born into this world there is an unspoken contract signed at birth. We are here for a specific amount of time physically, until our bodies deteriorate and our spirit travels elsewhere. I cannot tell you where we will go, but what I can say is the best way to prepare for our future is focusing on being our best present self. The way we live our life at this moment will determine our positioning later on. Our past serves as a guide towards our present endeavors and can teach us how to be successful and what will not make us successful. Accurate history is extremely valuable and research is a weapon against failure. You cannot know where you are going if you do not know where you are coming from. You must know the history of your own culture as well as the history of your interests. In these, lay the secrets to success, which can be patterned to pave the way for your own personal journey. If we focus on the future, we remind ourselves of the long journey we may have. This can become strenuous and discouraging. The thought of reaching a dream far away is always worst than actually physically doing it. Our mind will begin to think of ways and reasons why a dream is too farfetched, than before you know it, you will completely psych yourself out. That’s why it is imperative that we focus on the present and cherish each day as a new adventure. This way, expectations is controlled and we will avoid the need to overwhelm ourselves. The present is a reminder that we should always be grateful at all moments. As said earlier, our future is not promised and because of this we have to pay attention to the world around us now. We have to show love and respect to the world we live in and strive to be a positive force. We must set an example of being a remarkable and honorable human being. It is true that others may experience situations in life that may discourage a kind heart, but it is not our duty to judge, but to live our lives in the best way possible, hopefully showing others the right way. With hope, faith, perseverance, knowledge, wisdom and understanding the world becomes an exciting voyage. We discover the pleasure and joy in not having all the answers. We become at peace with ourselves and the things we cannot control. Do not live for the future; use your past as a reference and the present as a tool to accomplish your dreams. This was written in our hearts by the soul of the universe. Be the change you wish to see in the universe. Set the pace and become the example you wish to see. Learn to stand up for what you believe in, even if you are faced with criticism and judgment. It all comes with the territory of wanting to be a revolutionary. People will always oppose ideas that are different than what they are personally used to. It is a defense mechanism that the brain develops to protect the already instilled values, whether right or wrong. Be that 100th monkey that influences change that sets off a universal movement towards a positive direction. Do not become discouraged if your ideas or beliefs take a time for people to catch on or adjust to. True values must stand up to the test of time and sometimes our goals are accomplished at a much slower pace than we would like. So, keep pushing, keep your vision alive and execute your plan when the time is right. Perfect your vision daily, adjusting it until it the perfect vision. Be the example and promote your idea to everyone you encounter. Be passionate and sincere and people will have no choice but to tap into your consciousness. Once that happens, it becomes a domino effect. The more people you can touch, the more people will adapt to your vision and spread the gospels of your passionate dream. One attribute we all share as humans is the recognition of someone’s passion. We can feel the emotions of others and when we recognize someone’s spirit it is an innate desire to help that person achieve and accomplish. We than become a part of someone’s dream, using it as fuel towards ours as well. Our success influences people greatly, but it is our courage and persistence that really captures the hearts of people. We provide the nourishment for other people’s dreams and our triumph spirit can spark a movement that changes the world as we know. Be brave and dare to stand for something positive even if it is not understood at first. Stand the course of time, work hard and pray daily. Even if you do not believe in a higher force, prayer relaxes the mind and aligns your desires with the universe.

Bertrand Russell on Happiness
I was doing some research for a series of articles last year on the nature of happiness, and material from Russell made its way under my nose. No doubt you have heard, and perhaps have read his material before now. However, if on the contrary you have not, a very brief introduction;

2021: No Resolutions. No Expectations
I wrote this article a couple of months ago for one of Vocal's writing challenges. However, I think many of the things I shared are still relevant today (already three months into 2021!). This is a space for honest writing and personal growth, so I really wanted to share these thoughts (if they can help a single person, then it's worth it)….

Green shoots
After witnessing the spread around the world in the wake of COVID-19, we are one year from the moment life changed as we know it, of a global pandemic and the transformation of societies around the world. Along with the rest of the UK and the world, the city I have called home for six years has emptied of the richness of friends, connections and community.
