A fresh start is always a scary idea. Being far from home for so long makes it difficult to imagine how it'll be when you go back. I was born and raised in the United States, but living in Puerto Rico for 10+ years will definitely cause some culture shock when relocating back to the States. This is especially true when that move is to the Midwest.
After getting married, my husband and I decided we needed to look for something more for our family. Between health issues and financial instability, we wanted more. Our amazing friend decided to take a leap of faith and we were (and still are) so proud of his courage to do so. After much thought, the choice seemed like a no brainer. We applied for jobs and took the steps to a new start outside of our comfort zone.
We moved to a different country, a different culture, even though Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States it still was a big difference. In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, we were traveling across the island to reach a location where our phones could receive signal and allow us to communicate. We interviewed over the phone in parking lots and under bridges. The only places we could get signal were sparse and far from family. Through the entire ordeal we managed to get everything ready and take our leap.
Here are some factors we researched before deciding on where to move:
- Cost of living: Knowing how much we could afford and whether we could enjoy our time or have to work overtime just to make ends meets was especially important.
- Transportation availability: Being new and not having a vehicle makes it all the more difficult to explore and commute. Having public transportation nearby and easily accessible provided peace of mind.
- Job availability: Almost everywhere we looked in the city there were “now hiring” signs. This was a major plus. Having the options in case something else fell through was great.
- Weather: Coming from a Hurricane impacted location, we really wanted to know what the severe weather would look like in a new place.
Fast forward a few years and we are thriving. I have been able to do more for my health in these years than ever. I made a major decision to go through bariatric surgery for weight loss which I will go more in depth in another story. This has definitely helped with other health conditions I struggle with.
Another great milestone was the purchase of our first home. We began renting and while manageable, the thought was always there: “Wouldn’t paying for a house be just as much if not less that our rent?” After some debate and exploring options, we once again took a chance. Here we are a year later with our own home. Now the fun part, decorating and some changes to create the space we need and deserve.
I would say this was a difficult, yet best decision we have made for ourselves. Stepping out of our comfort zones is always a decision not to be taken lightly. It's something to be measured, with your heart and mind. For those contemplating taking a step in a different direction, I say do your research and make the move that is best for you.
This has been an amazing journey and so much is yet to come. I can't imagine where we would be if we didn't take a chance. 10 out of 10 do recommend. I know I am proud of us for what we have achieved and will continue to. New milestones up ahead and I can’t wait to move forward.
