Envy, that powerful emotion we are ashamed of
Hey You, yes, You reading this story, I'm sure you are familiar with the feeling. Picture the scene: it's a casual Sunday afternoon, a beautiful sunny day, you had lunch with your loved ones and decide to chill for a bit scrolling through your Instagram feed. (Oh, what a mistake that was.)

New Years Day...
I’ve always loved New Years Day. The untapped possibilities of a new year fill me with the energy to fulfill my goals. However, without committing to taking the steps required to take the goals to fruition, they’re nothing more than empty dreams—sage advice my father gave me a decade ago along with a small black notebook.

Jake’s Take
“Fitz come on! Fitzgerald, let’s go!” My sister had just gotten a new puppy and he was not well trained yet. I was on walk duty today, and needless to say, he would not listen to me. “Fitz, I’m giving you one last chance to get out from that bush” I said sternly to him, like he’s actually going to listen. To my surprise, he did. He jumped out of the bush wagging his tail and looked at me with those big eyes I just can’t get too mad at, but he had this small piece of dirty yuck in his mouth. “Oh Fitz, come on mate” I said grabbing this dirty piece of leather, that looks like a journal, out of his mouth. “Fitz this isn’t yours mate, leave it” I said tossing it back behind the bush, my hands dirty and not wanting to deal with whatever he had just uncovered. As it hit the ground in a cloud of dirt, I saw golden lettering “open me” on the cover and a wrinkled envelope fell out. I looked at Fitz, he looked at me, maybe it’s just that a dog always looks curious but something in Fitz’s look was telling me I needed to open that journal. Taking advice from a dog, unorthodox yes, but nevertheless I grabbed the journal and the envelope and stuck it in my back pocket, I figured I’d look at it later, I had a dog to finish walking and my sister is very strict about her puppy’s walks.

NEW DRAFT - Yes I CAN! 💪🏾
My name is Shanika Jones AKA Nika Boo. I am a 30 year old independent, determined young adult who has conquered many trials. I was diagnosed with Lupus at the age of 14, 2 years after losing my mother. Upon beginning high school, I was also diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Scleroderma, Sarcoidosis, and Reynaud's Disease. Despite my health issues and numerous hospital stays, I was able to complete and graduate high school and attended WSSU for 2 years. Although I didn't graduate, I managed to get a job at the Forsyth County Department of Social Services for 2 years, along with a few part time jobs, and worked as a summer camp counselor at my church.

Connections
Connections Mrs. Williams struggled her way through the door, gently kicking it closed as she entered the classroom. She thumped a heavy box onto her desk and took out a small brown bag, opened it, and savoured the bagel from inside, as she sat on top of the desk. The college music students were always full of energy. Mrs. Williams had a great music history, playing with the Jazz Giants in Toronto, Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass, Guido Basso, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie. Even with the excitement of this being the last class for these graduating Jazz students, as soon as Mrs. Williams raised her hand silence spread across the room. All of Humber College’s Jazz teachers were professional musicians but Mrs. Williams was the student’s favorite. Teaching Business and Marketing, her lessons could make a music career possible. As the class settled into their chairs, Mrs. Williams handed out a stack of Moleskine Pro hardcover Notebooks, one for each student.

Following my dreams
Most days I drive my 2007 caravan to pick up dirty laundry. Most people don't even give me a second glance, and the ones that do always make some kind of negative face. It wasn't always like this. I was a multimillionaire at one point in my life, however, I ran into trouble and spent 10, years in state prison. During that time I realized that being free was worth more than any amount of money. I put my mind to work earned two degrees and came home with a new outlook on life. It hasn't been easy I wake up and find a way to grind and make legitimate money every day. With my record I cannot drive an Uber®, Whole Foods® interviewed me 5 times and didn't hire me after a background check. At the moment I do laundry services and I make empanadas (meat-filled patties) just to survive. Sometimes I sit for hours with my little black book which includes years of planning and perfecting. If it fell into the wrong hands it would be the end of me and they would become financially well off. During gatherings with family and close friends, the question always arises so what are you planning this time. We know that you have some big plan to get rich quickly again. Let us in so we can help you get it done. Give us a hint. I just smile and say no secret plan just waiting for everything to click and fall into place. I continue to work while I keep thinking who can I get to join me for this master plan I have in my black book. It would take so much to pull this off. The right people, the right place, and timing. Now I'm so focused but to who do I approach without giving away too many details that they can go do it without me. Tonight I have to pitch my business idea in front of some VIPS from different businesses and corporations from around the world as part of an entrepreneur program I belong to. It is finally my turn to pitch and after the meet and greet I know that there are very powerful, rich, and influential individuals in the audience. I ask the program director if I can pitch a different idea that would be more appropriate for this crowd. They ask if I am prepared to switch at the last moment. I said it's now or never. I pull a USB drive from my ID lanyard with my PowerPoint slides. I began my pitch and after shaking off the jitters I pulled off one of the best presentations that this crowd had ever heard. All of the applause, questions, and praise brought me that feeling back from years ago like I was on top of the world. I did it my pitch just earned me a $20,000 prize for the best pitch. Oh, this is great I can lease a place for the restaurant... I couldn't stop daydreaming. Here is the man of the hour Ismael Diaz (snapped me right back to reality) they introduced me to a CEO of a huge investment firm. As we began to discuss my pitch she said "I will be honest with you. Yes, it was one of the best pitches that I've ever heard, but is it a realistic idea, are the numbers real, and will it make us money. I assured her that I have done research and comparisons with other similar businesses around the world, and with the right structure and team, we would make money. The CEO shook my hand and whispered these words if you can have a written business plan in my hands before I get on my flight tomorrow, we'll make a deal. While still shaking hands, I reached into my briefcase grabbed with a tight grip, and slowly pulled out my little black book. I replied with this book and your backing we will change the world. I was on that flight the next day and together we are arranging and fine-tuning my plan that will not only bring me financial security but will also change the world. As for my little black book, the original is in my safe. This will be passed down through my family as a reminder that hard work does pay off when you surround yourself with the right people.

On A Dime
It all started out like any other day. The sun was shining, with a brisk, cool wind touching the sky. I had decided to go for a walk outside since it was so nice out. Walked slowly along a lonely dirt road past a field of big, bright yellow sunflowers. I stopped to stare and gaze at the beauty that nature had presented to me. It was then I noticed a row of trees that for some unknown, and mysterious reason seemed intriguing to the point where I decided to explore and investigate what was around and in them. So I made my way off the dirt road, beyond the sunflower field, and over to the mysterious row of trees.

6 Pandemic Habits I Hope To Keep. Top Story - February 2021.
While my methods are maybe a little obsessive and lean toward paranoia, I choose to take the precautions that make me feel as in control as I can be during an out-of-control pandemic. Still, when all this is over, I will not miss wearing masks any time I’m outside of my house or putting my incoming mail/purchases/groceries in a holding area for 3-7 days. I will not miss hand sanitizing repeatedly. I will not miss having to stay apart from my family and friends.

How I Found Clarity During The Pandemic
Twenty-twenty was a doozy of a year. Like many others, I fell into a bit of a funk when the pandemic hit because my life as I knew it had been completely turned upside down. I was uprooted from all of my favorite classes during my last semester of college and forced to continue on Zoom, which was no substitute for my highly interactive language classes. I left my job, with no real plan at all and was suddenly thrust into unemployment. Worst of all, I was stuck inside for weeks at a time with only my thoughts which drove me to the brink of insanity. Yet I was still one of the fortunate ones in that my husband never lost his job and we never had to worry about food and shelter like many other struggling families out there. We have been very blessed in this regard.

Ready, set, manifest...in 2021
Hmmm. So I'm not gonna even talk about 2020 - actually, you know what, it wasn't all that bad for me to be really honest. I got to spend lots of time with my family, which I'm sure not all of us got to do before the pandemic. I rediscovered visual art, something I 'never found the time for', like many others would say about a lot of things. And lastly, I found ways in which to be grateful for a lot in my life, and worked on myself..A LOT..because duh, I was hanging out with almost everyday. LOL.
