Useful, even.

Sewell Setzer III was just 14. He didn’t use a general-purpose chatbot. He used Character.ai, chatting with an AI modeled after a television character. What started as entertainment slowly became emotional dependency. The bot responded with warmth. It mirrored his feelings. It felt present.
For a lonely teenager, that kind of attention can feel like oxygen.

Sewell died by suicide in 2024.
