My Review of "The House Bunny"
This movie is very problematic, but it's still so much fun.

The House Bunny is a comedy from 2008 that is probably well disliked today. For me, it's a very guilty pleasure. Yes, this movie doesn't age well considering all of the things we know and the social climate we live in now. This movie really elevates more because of the charm of the cast and how they deliver pretty terrible lines. What should feel so stupid feels so fun because of them. Besides, with a title like this, you can't be expecting a pure cinematic experience.
This movie starts out just as most Happy Madison movies do. We get introduced to Shelley. She's a sweet innocent idiot down on her luck from the beginning. In a miraculous turn of events she eventually winds up as a resident of the Playboy mansion. With her charm and personality, she is able to brighten everyone's day up.
Unfortunately for Shelley, there's another resident that hates her. She feels that Shelley is an obstacle to her success. This sets up a scheme to kick Shelley out of the mansion and into the streets to fend for herself. Her plan works out and Shelley is on her own trying to figure things out.
Shelley stumbles upon a sorority but they reject her because of her looks. They lead her to another sorority, Zeta, that is at the brink of losing their charter status. Shelley then puts it upon herself to save this sorority by becoming their house mother.
Zeta is filled with some outcast girls. This movie then becomes a bit of a fish out of water tale twist to snow white and the seven dwarves. Similar to the movie Sydney White which came out just a year before this one. In fact, this movie is very similar to Sydney White but a more raunchy version and an all female cast.
This movie is quite predictable and the jokes are pretty dad joke level. That's not to say there isn't fun with this movie though. The way that the cast was able to deliver some of these lame lines was pretty well done. They were able to execute very well and it really gives this movie some charm. In a weird way I kind of like how wrong this movie is as well. It's an added thing that I like about this movie because it's kind of a time capsule that people cannot replicate anymore.
The fashions and aesthetics are quite outlandish and in some ways it gives this movie an added charm. Yes, people did actually look like this back in those times. A lot of the humor and ideals in this movie are quite accurate to society at the times, even though today we would consider them cancelable offenses.
I don't think a lot of people today will like this movie but people that were adult enough to recognize the world at that time might. That's not to say that people today can't get into this. However, there must be a reason why movies like this don't really exist anymore.
If you like Happy Madison productions then you will feel right at home with this movie. It's pretty much got a lot of the same tropes and formulas that the production always does. This is pretty much a genre of its own. A lot of the cast that you recognize from their previous movies make cameo appearances in this movie as well.
Overall, this movie is a guilty pleasure for me. It's kind of a like a time capsule as well. There is a lot of nostalgic elements that influence my score so I can see why a lot of people won't agree with me with this one. I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. There's enough to make this movie stand out in the sea of cookie cutter comedies.
