My Review of "Sydney White"
This is a movie for those that are nostalgic for the late 2000s. It's not a great movie but there can be some enjoyment to it.

Sydney White is a comedy that came out in 2007. It's basically a cross mix between the Snow White fairy tale along with Revenge of the Nerds. There's a ton of tongue in cheek homages to the two classic movies. The twist is that it's based in 2007. There are a ton of references to the time and because of this, the movie can feel very dated for some.
The movie starts out with Sydney explaining her life story. She's grown up in a very supportive household. Her father ended up raising her because at a young age her mother passed away. Now she's come to the age where she's going to go off to college.
As a nod to her mother, she's decided to go to her mother's alma mater. Her mother had belonged to a sorority. She had told Sydney that she had some of her best memories from college and that many of her friends were formed there. That's why it's a dream for Sydney to join this sorority group and make the best of her college years.
Unfortunately for Sydney the leader of the sorority is Rachel. Rachel is basically an evil woman that fits the bill as the evil queen. Her plan is to rid the street of a dilapidated house on the street named the vortex. They can't simply do this because the vortex houses seven outcasted misfits. These guys are basically your seven dwarves.
Rachel also rules the sorority with an iron fist and she's pretty strict about how the ladies of the house conduct themselves. She's cruel and mean to all of them. When Sydney finally comes to the house to pledge for the sorority, Rachel hates her immediately. Mainly because a popular guy named Tyler takes a liking to Sydney immediately.
As Sydney's popularity grows so does Rachel's disdain for her. She continually sabotages Sydney. While Sydney overcomes these challenges she starts to grow on her fellow students and makes new friends. Ultimately, the movie delivers a message to be accepting of others and try to be nice to them.
Watching this movie I've noticed that there are a lot of things that they did back in the day that they just don't do anymore. Why were female villains always named Rachel for example? The writers were way ahead of their time with their understanding of technology as well. At the time this movie was made they had no concept of cloud computing yet they were able to implement some of these things into this movie.
There are a lot of pop cultural and nerdy references in this movie that I think some people will get now. Some of this stuff that used to be really obscure back in the day are quite known nowadays in pop culture which is weird.
I thought the exaggerated tone of the good guys versus bad guys was really funny. The good guy literally feeds the homeless and uses this to help woo Sydney off her feet.
This movie also tries to be a family friendly movie yet there are certain things in here that are pretty raunchy. They don't say things outright but an adult can understand what's really being said. I miss that about movies back in the day. They should bring this back but I don't think movies are written like this anymore. There are subtleties that are pretty clever but can be dismissed quickly as well.
Overall, this movie knows what it is and it doesn't claim to be a masterpiece. Viewers are sort of aware of what they're getting into as well when watching something like this. I think there's added nostalgia if you were around the time when this movie was released. There's some sort of warm and fuzzy feeling watching this despite the cheesiness. I have to give this one a 6 out of 10.
