My Review of "Picard: Season 3"
I wished there was a bit more direction. They tried to please too many people with this season.

Picard: Season 3 has just finished up in 2023. It has a few ups and downs and frankly I'm not sure who it was made for. I am writing this as a casual Star Trek fan as I know this show was supposed to be geared toward me. Though there were times when I knew they were trying to pander to the fans of the original Star Trek: The Next Generation series fans.
I've been keeping up with this series since the beginning. Although I was a bit on and off again with the first two seasons, this one kind of went on a tangent. There were times when I was hoping that they would focus more of the world that they built in the first two seasons rather than push "The Next Generation" pandering onto this season.
Still even though I'm only a casual fan, I have seen all of "The Next Generation" movies. The TV show is another story. I don't think I'd ever be able to get through all of that being a casual fan. Their movies were hard enough to go through. With my knowledge of the movies I could still grasp some of the nods and homages they were making throughout the season. If you have not seen the TV show or the movies I think you will be lost on a lot of the references they bring up.
That brings up the question, who is this show made for? They definitely dumb down a lot of stuff for us casual viewers but I think that could aggravate some of the more hardcore fans. I didn't like the fact that they retread a lot of the same stories they keep going over and over about. What is with this series and the Borg? It keeps coming up! Last season was about it and then this season was about this Borg thing again. They even had a movie with the Borg. My brother who is a fan of the series mentioned that it was the highlight of the original series. It's just weird how this sci-fi TV show just suddenly becomes a zombie show.
They also revisited the story of Jean-Luc having a fully grown up unknown son. They did this in a past Star Trek movie as well. It was totally predictable as well as they were getting to that reveal so trust me I'm not spoiling anything.
A lot of this season felt very hokey and on the nose. That's not to say some of the last season was the same. It was nice to have the whole cast back together again for this season but at some points it did feel a bit forced. They did however feel cohesive and brought some life to the party.
The real winner in this season for me had to be Captain Shaw. This guy stole the season whenever he was on the air. Shaw is hilarious and kind of reminds me of the Private Hudson character that Bill Paxton plays in the movie Aliens. He's this hard ass jerk whenever nothing is going on but when things go down he's a totally different person. I love his rational thinking throughout this wacky season as well. There were a few times when you're like did he die? Somehow he continues to survive. I wish they had more of him in the show.
Overall, this season had a ton of setbacks but I still had some enjoyment to this show. That's ultimately what's most important. I also liked the fact that the season ended cleanly without any cliffhangers or anything. It was very jarring how much fanservice they added to this show but I hope fans appreciated those moments because I didn't. Still I have to give this season a 6.5 out of 10. I don't think it was worthy of watching it again but fans of the series might like it?
