My Review of "Interior Chinatown"
Though there were some highlight moments this was a little too convoluted for me.

Interior Chinatown is an interesting mystery series. I thought it would be an interesting watch because there were some fun comedians in the cast. The problem is that this isn't a comedy at all. Sure it has some really funny moments but overall it's not meant to be a comedy. It's a mystery that isn't told in a conventional way. A lot of people will appreciate the abstract method of their delivery but I wasn't one of them.
The show starts off with Willis. He's a quiet Chinese guy that happens to live in Chinatown. He's grew up and lived all his life there in the shadow of his popular older brother. This was never a problem. His family life was great as everyone idolized his older brother, even he did himself. All this changed when his older brother mysteriously disappears and assumed dead.
Now his parents are seemingly estranged. He's on a vendetta to figure out what happened to his older brother as the police never solved the crime. This'll be very tough as he's only a waiter at his uncle's Chinese restaurant. That is until one fateful day when there is a crime scene across the street.
Willis notices a woman that is kidnapped and he is paralyzed with fear. The police come and it's a huge ordeal. Though it's quite odd the way things turn out. Willis notices that he's not noticed at all and the police are acting quite weird. It almost seems like the show is aware that it's a show. This is a common thing throughout the runtime of this season.
There's a new attractive detective working with the police called Lana. Of all the people in Chinatown she decides to ask Willis to help her out with a mysterious case.
At first I thought hey this is interesting. There's a lot of mystery behind this mystery of this show. It might be going the WandaVision way where they don't realize that they're in a TV show and it's going to break the fourth wall a lot. This kind of happens but not really. It puts us on a wild journey of twist after convenient twist.
Normally I'm all for twists in these shows but the way they did these twists makes it feel like some sort of multiverse twist. It gets our characters out of trouble out of magical situations of TV magic. There's no real rules behind this world and that makes it hard to swallow. The characters in this show don't really ever outsmart the system they just live it.
There is also definitely a ton of social commentary behind all of the decisions they made behind this show. I felt that these messages were very heavy handed and almost felt like the show was trying to give me lessons. They wanted to give me lessons in their interpretation of the world rather than give me an entertaining mystery story. I came here for a fun time rather than a lecture.
That's not to say that there wasn't some highlight moments. I loved the Fatty character. Every time he was on screen he would steal the show. It's really unfortunate because he's a small side character and had not business stealing most of the show. I was always looking forward to seeing what the Fatty character was going to be up to but he was barely on.
Overall, I would definitely not recommend this show to anyone unless you're into abstract storytelling and being lectured about societal problems. I'm here to have a good time and I barely got that out of this series. It's too bad because I felt like there was a ton of potential with this series. They just want off the rails and went crazy midpoint and that was really unfortunate. I have to give this series a 4 out of 10. Please don't bring this back for another season...
