Presence

Review

Steven Soderberg is one of those directors that when he hits, he hits and when he doesn’t, it's terrible. Well his newest project, Presence, was released earlier this year and it's one of his best.

Right off the bat the cinematography catches your attention. It's 3rd person which is rare in film, but it feels even more eerie then that. It feels like when you play a video game that you are seeing from your characters POV. Like one of those point and clicks games where you are moving through a house or something and the camera movies ments make the are around you feel a little creepy or unsettling. Yeah that seems to be what we are doing here. It feels like we are the presence in the house.

Also this is a long time for the movie to have no dialogue and I love it. Double it and pass it on. I love when directors and writers force the acting adn the direction to tell the story. It's still at the behest of the script but it's not bound by the script it is the best possible way for the film to feel well balanced and collaborative.

“Swim season doesn’t start until November”...high school swim season starts in January, December at the absolute earliest.

I love that this kid is recognizing that his mom is a little crazy, and that her relationship with him is more than a little weird.

Oh now our weird disembodied presence who we are sharing perspective with is moving shit. This is very creepy, great score by the way.

“And she can’t take us all down with her” Ma’m this is your CHILD you are talking about. A child that you have deemed less important than her brother already and now you have 0 interest or motivation to help her through whatever it is that she’s feeling. Parent of the year here. Dad’s doing great, he’s good. Fuck this mom though.

Oh this husband knows his wife is into something. Something she shouldn’t be into. God I love the way that this story is being delivered. Because we are the presence in the house we are mostly overhearing conversations. It really slows down the flow of information and I love that. I think that delivering the story this way forces the audience to engage with it and that is something that we really need more of.

The teenagers are teenagering…and she thinks her dead friend is the presence in the house. As they start to remove clothing, her entire closet collapses. Like a warning.

Why is her brother such an asshole? Oh well probably cause mom’s a bitch and coddled him and trained him to think he is the most important little twat in the whole world and no one else matters but him. Even just the way he recaps his day to his mom, he’s telling a story about how his friends are assholes and his mom is laughing and giggling and eating it up. It's super gross.

And in return the presence destroys this little fucks room. That’s good, it's what he deserves. Good job dad! Getting in this little shits face for treating his sister like crap.

What the fuck is this shit head teenager putting in her drink? Saved by the ghost.

It's like the presence is trying to get to Chloe but is trapped behind some kind of wall. If I have to watch this stupid little teenage waste of space rape this girl I am going to flip a table. Come on ghost, let’s see how corporeal you can get. Death? Could you kill this boy? I’d be okay with that. Oh he's gonna kill her??? Excuse you very much. I’m literally screaming at my tv. Oh he killed her friend, and another girl. He’s a little serial killer. And her brother is the one that brought him into this house. The reason he exists in their lives is because her brother is an asshole, who made friends with other assholes. Yes, I have decided to blame this on the brother, and by extensions he mom cause it's her fault her son is an asshole.

The ghost in this house did a better job of protecting this girl than her whole ass family.

Damn. This is a good fucking movie. I don’t know if it breaks the top 10 for last year but it's really good. I am in love with the cinematography. 9/10 easily.
