My Review of "Inception"
This is a wild ride. You'll have to keep a lot of notes in your head to keep up though.

Inception is a totally wild movie that came out back in 2010. I saw it back when it first came out but I wasn't too sure how it would translate to opinion today. Originally I loved this movie. I thought it was fascinating and absurdly creative back in the day. The concept of the show is still wildly creative but I wanted to see if I could still get into it. It is after all a very long movie.
The movie starts out with an introduction to our main character Cobb. He's going through somewhat of a flashback. In this sort of flashback, (I say sort of because time plays a crucial part in this movie) he is on a job. He's been tasked to extract information from a character named Saito.
Cobb and his team didn't realize that they were actually auditioning for Saito rather than robbing him. Saito wants their help in creating an inception. Now I have to run it back to explain to you what this inception is all about.
In this universe, it's possible to travel into people's dreams. Within dreams there are a set of rules but ultimately they are in the consciousness of the dreamer's head. This means that they can take secret information. In the case of inception, they're going to plant an idea into the dreamer's head.
Saito basically wants Cobb and his team to infiltrate his competitor's (Fischer) head to make him want to split up his company. If Fischer remains in his current trajectory he will monopolize the industry resulting in Saito going out of business. They never really explain what that industry is.
In payment of doing this job Saito will grant Cobb entry back to the United States where his children reside. Cobb hasn't been able to go back home for mysterious reasons that will be revealed later on in the movie.
Of course Cobb will do anything to see his children again so he agrees to the deal despite his reservations of inception. Many don't even think it's possible but Cobb is adamant that it can be done.
We then assemble the team and in doing so a lot of the rules of the dream sequences are explained to the audience through their conversation. There's a lot to take in and they pretty much abide by most of the rules that they make.
There were some that I was kind of iffy about but there were ways to justify some of these issues. You can tell that they put a lot of thought and work to tidy up as many holes in the story as possible. Still some of them can be argued like if they're in a dream and they could think up of any weapon and armor why use pistols?
The argument was not to throw off the dreamer too much or else the world will come after you. If they're coming at you then go crazy with it. There's even a scene where one of the characters is having trouble sniping an enemy off the room. His teammate grabs a bigger gun to take him out and says dream bigger. Why weren't they able to do this throughout the movie?
That's not the point of the movie though and you'll just have to go with it just like you would just go with a dream you had while sleeping. It also makes for more intense action sequences. The film does a good job in intensifying the drama of the scene with the time aspect of the movie. This made a huge difference in putting pressure into the scenes.
At two and a half hours this movie is startlingly thrilling. It had me glued to the screen for every scene even the ones explaining dream worlds and diving into second and third dreamworlds. Back in 2010 this was our multiverse.
The imagination of this movie runs rampant because they can be anywhere and anyone they want. It's based on dreams so you have to be creative but still grounded. They do still have to make their target believe in the dream.
Ultimately the movie is based on love and loss. Cobb is dealing with the loss of his wife and Fischer is dealing with the loss of his father. Each of these characters grieve in their own way but ultimately have these thoughts deep in their consciousness. This movie tries to explain to the audience about letting go to move on.
Overall, I am very happy to say that I still enjoyed this movie thoroughly but didn't expect this. I thought going through the whole explanation of the dream worlds was going to kill the pacing of the movie but it didn't. They were able to explain the rules through visually stunning scenes with spectacular effects. I have to give this movie a 9 out of 10. It's passed the test of time and I will likely watch this again.
