My Review of "Cocoon"
This classic movie never gets old for me. I guess the characters in it don't either?

Cocoon is a science fiction movie that came out in 1985. I watched it when I was young. For a movie with practically no action at all in it, I'm surprised that I liked it so much. There was something about it that felt comfortable and warm. I decided to watch it again after so many years to see if I would still enjoy this classic. Luckily, I still feel the same way about this movie so many years later.
The movie starts off with aliens searching our oceans for something. We don't know what it is but it's important for the movie. We then get introduced to Ben and Art. The two of them are good friends and they live in a retirement community. In this community, they're two of the able bodied individuals to help get things. They get groceries and other helpful items for their friends.
Pretty much everyone knows everyone in this small retirement community. Unfortunately, life is catching up to them. They aren't as spry or healthy as they used to be. People are getting cancer and even worse, passing away. It's sad to see but it's a reality that we all will eventually encounter in our lives.
To pass the time, Ben and Art often sneak into an empty pool house to go for swims. They don't have much but at least they have some joys in swimming and hanging out with one another.
Meanwhile, the aliens in the beginning have finally found what they've been looking for. It's in the middle of the ocean and they plan to use the pool house that Ben and Art swim in to host their findings. They rent the pool house and add these mysterious cocoons in the pool.
Ben and Art don't really care, all they want to do is swim in the pool. The crazy thing is, when they start swimming in the pool with the cocoons at the bottom of the pool they start to feel invigorated. It's as if they've found the fountain of youth. This is when the movie really gets going.
I like that this movie talks about philosophical aspects of a fountain of youth. They could have explored a little further but it's a light hearted movie that doesn't need to go that deep. It explores the corruption of human behavior when people discover something that can benefit them. This movie even touches on death and loss. There are a ton of heavy topics they touch upon. Some would say that there might be a little too much for such a small movie. None of the answers are ever given, we just ponder these things as the movie is playing out.
I love the characters in this movie and I thought each of them have a realistic portrayal. They seem very relatable and act accordingly to the situations that they're put in. I particularly liked the old timey vernacular they used in this movie. There's certain slang I haven't heard before and it was pretty fun to hear each of them banter.
I can see some people's reservations of this movie because they keep it so open ended with so many elements in the movie. I for one really enjoyed it for the characters and the nice pacing. It's never too heavy for me to reflect and not enjoy the runtime of the show.
Overall, it's a very fun movie to watch and it's kind of a blast from the past. I may have a lot of nostalgia influencing my rating of this movie. This is a very warm and fun movie to watch and I have to give it a 7 out of 10. You definitely have to watch it while shutting off your brain a little as well though. I still highly recommend this movie.
